Stoked with the dragonfly. Need help choosing my next spyderco.

Hmm...strange. Do you have the lightweight blue model? Thats the one I have and the knife will not budge by actuating the lock.

EDIT: tried again, it does open. Although I think the lighter blade makes it "harder" (at least for me) to flick open using the lock (I'm comparing to the weighty blade on a 950 rift). And I find the ball lock stiffer. However, I think theyre both equally good since I open via thumb stud anyways.

I posted a picture of mine a few posts up, mine was a little stiff in the beginning, but now if fly's open
If you hold mine in the horizontal position and just pull the ball-lock just a tad the blade will fall open & swing like the pendulum on a clock
I can't put the dam thing down, I'm playing with it all the time

Hey rickster, as I said in a previous post, I'm pretty much decided on the m2 lightweight, but still weighing all my options. I guess just about my only doubt or hang-up is I'm still a little worried about the "lightweight" being tough enough. I've seen a few reviews saying the handle felt cheap, or giving an "opinion" that the knife may not hold up to hard use, but I'm yet to read about anyone actually managing to tear one up. Whatever I get is going to do a lot of fish cleaning...like every day. Mainly cutting calf thick mackerel into steaks. Lots of slicing with the edge and popping spines with the tip. U gotta put some decent pressure on some of the bigger ones. Not exactly "hard use" but not opening envelopes either. I feel like the consensus opinion so far is "don't worry! Get it, use it hard, it's not gonna fall apart on you!!". Can I sign your name to that too?? Part of me wants to get the g10 version, but i feel like the lightweight just has too many boxes checked and is a better fit overall!

Thank you everyone for your opinions on this, seriously, and sorry to keep going in circles on this ad nauseum. I think I just need a couple more owner endorsements before I pull the trigger. Hehe.

I have really never put mine to hard use, after explaining in more detail what you are going to use it for, like cutting up mackerel which I have done so I know what your are talking about, I would "NOT" choose the translucent manix, My feelings are you need something much more heavy duty, Manix XL would be very good IMHO
I almost think you should be looking at a mid sized fixed blade

Hahaha. Damn! I was almost there, and I had to keep pushing! :-). Thank u for the honest opinion rickster. I am considering everything. Still a lot of check marks for the m2 lightweight...weight, ffg, anti corrosive steal, locking mechanism. Everything's a trade off isn't it? ;-). Guess I have to prioritize. Again, thanks for the honest opinion, even if it wasn't what I wanted to hear.

I still like the Manix 2 translucent blue, just not sure if you are going to work it to death. second choice would have to be a Delica.

I think the Manix 2 LW should work fine.. I've done some light woodworking and even once (just for curiosity) did some not too intense batoning with it. Held up fine.

However, in my opinion the Manix 2 LW is not a great work knife because of the sub-par BD1 steel.. It's easy to sharpen and takes a wicked edge, but if I'm going to be using the knife for a day of work (e.g. when I worked as a furnishing contractor, cutting lots of tape and cardboard) then the edge will not last and be quite dull by the end of the day. If it has S30V like the regular Manixes, it would be perfect.

Yup, I sat down and kind of made a pro/con list for the manix and the others I'm considering. When I look at everything, the manix 2 LW just comes too close to what I want in all categories. I think it's the only logical choice. And you know what? The knife is only $70 bucks! If it works for me then it will be an awesome bargain. If not, then no big loss.

A lot of it came down to weight. I neck carry my knives almost exclusively, so if I have a knife that I'm not carrying because its a hassle or too heavy...then it's worthless to me. Doesn't matter how strong the handle is or how fancy the steel is. At the end of the day I gotta get the one that I know I'll carry! If I use it everyday and love it but it only lasts a year, hell, I'll buy another one for $70! :-).

Well, my manix lightweight shipped today. It will be a couple of weeks before I get someone to bring it down to Costa Rica. I'll report in once I get it.

Congrats. Over time, I've focused on light weight. I took the Victorinox Manager SAK off my keychain a few years ago and started carrying a ZDP-189 Dragonfly everywhere. This weighs about the same as the SAK, but is more useful. I bought the lightweight blue Manix recently and the availability of a full size blade in a lightweight knife is nice.
