Stolen Gerber Mark II

Hi,

I received a Gerber Mark II survival knife in 1977 as a thank you for certain services rendered to some Navy Seals. It was stolen in 1979 and stained, but recovered. It was stolen again in 2003 and has not been recovered.

After the first theft I very sloppily etched my initials, BMG, onto the blade with some acid. I did not (and do not) care about collector's value and I'm embarrassed at the sloppy job I did, but it will identify the knife as mine. It has the fine shaped blade, not the straight one, and came with a green leather sheath of the style with a strap that crosses the finger-guard at an angle. The sheath had a coiled leather leg strap at the bottom and both slits and the military wire-type attachment for hanging on a belt, though I never carried it.

This knife is important to me and I would like to recover it again. If anyone should come across it I have enabled the messaging for my username on this forum, so please let me know. If anyone has purchased it for their collection I will reimburse you if you will return it. (But please don't try to profit from my loss.)

Thank you,

--Brian

Thank you, Charley Mike. It's unlikely that any members of the forum have it, but someone out there does and maybe they will find this posting by searching for "Gerber Mark II Survival Knife BMG initials" or something like that.

I think it was stolen for drug money and probably fenced or pawned. Hopefully it will get sold/traded around until someone gets curious about the initials and finds this thread. I want to be clear: I will assume whoever comes to me with the knife probably bought it honestly, not knowing it was stolen, and I will not hold it against them. It was the original thief who committed the sin.

What state are you in?

I can keep an eye out on the web but it may help any to let some local members know, keep an eye out at the pawn shop and all that.

It was stolen in Oregon about 5.5 years ago, so it could be anywhere now. I had almost given up on it, then I remembered the etched initials and decided to try one more time. Maybe a good person will find this thread while searching for info about the knife with the mystery initials and return it. I thank you all for indulging me with this opportunity.

Charley Mike, isn't it a shame that the "crack" in "crack heads" is an adjective and not a verb? --Brian

Yup... "crack" some skulls... I had a CFO2 got stolen by some asshat, prolly pawned it for $50 worth of dope.

Sorry about your loss but thanks for your service. Have you ever checked with the pawn shops in the area? Some of them are run by reputable people who abhor thieves and stolen goods. Best of luck to you.

it is your thread op.

hope ya find it. stolen twice has to set some sort of bad record. good luck on the hunt to bring it home.

Well here I am, back again. The knife has never turned up. I'd still like to recover it and I will still reimburse anyone who finds it for their costs and shipping. But I've pretty much given up that it will actually happen. It's funny how I can lose some pretty big things and get over it, but then a little one like this just keeps bugging me.

So once again, if anyone is searching the web for info about this knife and comes across my posting, please contact me by message on this site. I think I have it setup so I will be notified of your message. I assume it has passed through multiple hands since it was stolen and that you had nothing to do with the theft.

A bit of additional description. The knife would date to 1977 or earlier as that's when I received it and it appeared new at the time. The pommel and guard of the grip were dark colored and the main part of the grip was a somewhat lighter grey/green if I recall correctly. The blade is the wasp shaped style with double edge towards the tip and has serrations farther up. The sheath was green leather. It had a leather leg strap at the point end of the sheath, though it was still coiled the last time I saw it, and had both belt slits and wire hook for utility belt. No sharpening stone on the sheath. The first thief was a salmon fisherman who apparently used it for gutting his fish, so it was already somewhat stained before I put the initials on it. (Sloppy, just painted them on with some acid.) I fear that someone just saw it as a scruffy old knife and used it until it was too rusty and then chucked it. Not everyone is a collector. (Guilty, myself.)

Wow! You get a "P" for persistence.

Have you put a watch on eBay for that kind of knife? Because it's vintage, someone is likely to sell it for value, even in poor shape.

Do pawn shops have a network they can access, like junk yards?

If you have a photo of it, you could do an image search. You could ask AI to search for any mention of a Mark II with those initials.
