After a lengthy delay, a package I sent out was delivered to the buyer. Between my mailing and the delivery, someone had ripped the box open and stolen the knife. I immediately refunded the buyer.
This Starmate has the serial number 845 engraved on it. It also has unique high polished and re-shaped swedges. If you see it posted anywhere, it's the one that was stolen. This is the second time a knife I sent out via USPS got stolen en route to the buyer.

Sounds like someone at the post office knows who's packages to lift at this point.

Might consider a different Post Office.. or maybe UPS/FedEx.

I'll keep an eye out on here, ebay, and reddit. I'm around those three a lot.

I lost 3 Hinderers en-route, and received an OK&T Ferox in a box that was cut open. This one, the thief failed, as the shipper glued the knife against the box, from the inside. Very smart thing to do, I thought. My guess is that the higher the insurance is, the more likely this is to happen :(

Yiiikes.. that's a lot of cash. Probably not far off on the insurance thing either. I always just send priority and hope for the best with "Tool" as the description I give the postman.

With as many issues reported here regarding the failure of the USPS to honor insurance claims, I just self-insure and send Priority with a signature requirement.

It really sucks to read this crap, but it's also great to see how doing the "right thing" has not completely gone the way of the dodo.

Thanks man. It has occurred to me that the same woman at my local PO took both packages which were stolen from.

Yeah, I'm probably going to be taking some kind of theft deterrent measures going forward, under the assumption that my packages are being handled by thieves. Or just stop selling. I am also self insured on everything I send out because I have the same distrust that Blues Blues expressed over claims being honored.

May be a stupid question.. I do that too but on a far more basic level.

Would be elaborate a little on this "self insure" thing? That would help a lot of us I'm sure.

Also has anyone messed with this Pirateship thing? Is there any advantage other than cheaper shipping for people that send a lot of packages like a sheathmaker, sharpener, maker, and the like?

From what I've read here on the forums, UPS, (and perhaps FedEx, but I'm not positive), has a better policy of honoring claims. (And as I recall, honoring evidence of an agreed upon transaction price for the item shipped...whether via PM, email, etc.)

I should probably go to the UPS store in town, but I'm usually lazy and just go to the USPS, even though it's not much closer.

Something worth considering.

Ahhh ok.. so no different than my SOP.

I thought their was a special company ya'll were using for a minute by the way i was reading that lol. I got excited for a second.
Years ago I had one of those knife collection insurance policies. But after a few years I let it lapse. They supposedly covered losses incurred during shipping. Not sure if terms are still the same or not.

That’s exactly how I do it, on pricier items though I’ll overnight it.
Same here, now. I used to pay for the insurance, but not anymore. Too much hassle, and getting too expensive.

That said, I've had one claim with UPS (a computer motherboard) that was a royal pain in the butt, however, they finally paid out after ~6-7 months. 2 claims with USPS that were pretty straightforward, and I was paid back inside of 60 days once I provided "proof" of value with receipts and ebay sale (one a digital camera, which based on the package weights in transit was stolen at the very PO where my SIL packed it into the box in open view of the employees  and the box arrived empty, the other a nice set of speakers off of ebay where the package went completely MIA).
