Hi guys-

I sure hate posting this... :( :(

A fellow forum member sent me a camp knife that he purchased on the secondary market for some clean-up work. I completely refinished the knife and mailed it back to him well over a month ago. (I had it a lot longer than I meant to :o, but that's not the point of this thread).

Unfortunately, the Postal Service only managed to get the knife from Washington to the Portland, OR, sorting facility. I have filed a report/claim with the USPS, but they do not seem to be concerned as they're just giving me a lot of run-around. :grumpy:

So, if you see this knife somewhere, PLEASE contact me! NickWheelerJs at hot mail dot com is the best way to reach me.

Thanks!

Nick, I send knives in two boxes if possible. One inside the other, each addressed. That way when USPS destroys the package you hope the one inside survives. This did save me once. The inside box showed up about a week late. Unless it is stolen of course. Good luck.

If I'm able to help I certainly will, really hate to hear about this kind of thing happening. Only thing I'm not clear on is "So, if you see this knife somewhere, PLEASE contact me!" Because if USPS has it "somewhere" (I've been down that road and it sucks) how would any of us see the knife? Maybe I just misunderstood something.

Anyway, if I think of anything that may help I'll be sure to let you know.

That sucks. I recently had a priority package take over 2 weeks to get to me, only thing USPS was able to say was: "It was missrouted".

Did the package have insurance?

Will keep an eye out.

I've had two packages get messed up in the USPS.

One was a watch winder box that was insured. They refused to pay the claim as the package had the wrong color label placed on the box by the clerk at the shipping post office.

The other was some stuff sent by my granddaughter. I received a note saying that the perishable food stuffs had spoiled due to delays in shipping and had been destroyed. I also get the original label, without the ID numbers they needed to figure out where the screw up was.

Best of luck.

Nick,
I feel your pain. Sent a knife to my cousin in Idaho. He's just been deployed to Afghanistan.
The knife even had some wood from a tree our late grandfather cut.
My cousin received a neighbor's mail and I assume a neighbor got the knife.
There was a letter in the box, so if someone kept it they're a real piece of crap.

Tad

I believe he is thinking along the lines of it got ripped off and is getting sold on EBAY or AMAZON, in which case we would see it.

Yes, that^^^

In a perfect world I would trust all Postal workers, but.... :(

The package was triple wrapped with heavy brown paper tape and Priority labels--- going from WA to VA. It is possible that it's simply misplaced... but my gut says it's in a postal workers truck/junk-drawer/ebay store. The last thing the PO told me was, "Sorry if you are not satisfied with the service."

So it may sound like I'm jumping the gun on this, but I sent it on August 29.

Tad- that truly sucks, I'm really sorry to hear that! :(

Thanks guys :)

That's a screwed up mess Nick. I hope it gets straightened out soon.

OH, OK. If I see it on eBay or anywhere online I will definitely let you know. Really sorry this happened to you OP.

What you might want to do is put up lots and lots of pictures of your knife on a blog or someplace so that Google indexes them. If whoever stole the knife decides to also steal one of your pictures for the aution, or for any other reason you can use tinyeye to do a reverse image search. Just and though even if it is a longshot.

I'll try and keep an eye out locally. I like to haunt the local gun shows and pawn shops. Have not seen it yet. I know I would remember seeing one of your knives for sale for sure!

I have had the same thing happen with the USPS, package arrived in my town but disappeared from there, they would not pay my claim, but I did get a line, we will continue to look for it, Three years ago, still no package!

Sorry to hear that, Nick. A beautiful knife, too. I've never had this happen (yet) but I dread it. I wish you the best luck in finding it.

Nick I have had this happen to me also. They are very slow . It took them about 3 months but they did find and deliver it. Good luck. KT

For the purpose of disclosure, I'm the forum member that sent the knife to Nick. It's a real shame the post office seems to have lost it. Nick has sentimental attachment to the making of it, and on my end that knife was one of my early grails. I had missed out on it a couple of times when it came up on the secondary market, and jumped on it when it was up for resale here at BF years ago. So we both have attachment to the knife beyond its monetary value.

So yeah, if anyone sees that on the market, please let Nick or me know though it's probably easier to remember to contact Nick.

BTW, thanks for posting this, Nick.

I remember that knife well and would recognize it in a heartbeat. Sorry this had to impact two good guys.

Even though the overall tone of this subject gets me really angry--- your post made me actually laugh. So thanks for that! :D

Thanks for chiming in David... I didn't want to put your name in here without you knowing about it.

I do want to point out that I have mailed all but a couple of my knives and blade blanks (that's a few hundred packages) through the USPS over the last several years because normally they provide outstanding service at really fair prices. Typically I can send a knife from here to the East coast via Priority mail and it gets there in 2 days.

And I certainly don't think all USPS workers are not trustworthy! All of the folks that work at the PO in this little town and the one I grew up in are first class people! :) What I meant is it only takes one cruddy person to make a knife to disappear.

Thanks guys :)

I like making pine box shippers, with screws , had pretty good luck with priority mail so far, but there are plenty of turds out there
