Stolen Knife Alert

I'm distressed to report that I sold a beautiful Adam DesRosiers knife to a BladeForums member and it has been stolen (or lost) in the custody of Fedex. It was shipped on Friday February 16th from a Kinko's in Reisterstown, Maryland. It is shown by their records as being picked up by Fedex and nothing reliable after that at all. It is one of a kind. Adam called it his Jurassic Bird and Trout Knife and it can be seen on his website (http://alaskablades.com/_wsn/page2.html) and in the photos below. Please keep your eyes and ears open. It's a large and heavy chopper in L6 with a convex grind and large, raised clip (almost saber-style). It has a beautifully contoured ironwood grip. It weighs nearly 2 pounds and has an 11 1/2" blade. No visible hamon. Plain leather sheath.

Thanks!

Steve

Ugghhh. This is a disease these days. Sorry to hear, Steve.

FedEx Ground or FedEx Express service?

I hope it is "found" soon. Good luck w/ Fedex searching.
Is this a common thing having knives disappearing in the hands of the Fedex, UPS, and others. Is there anyway to protect the buyer and seller other than insurance??

Well, if it was picked up on a Friday, it probably went nowhere until Monday. I always wait one month and one day before I panic. If it went by Fedex Ground, they don't work weekends and are useless at sending stuff to the right place. I had a set of golf clubs go from Michigan, to Toronto (40 minutes from me) in 4 days and then to Alberta and back to Toronto in an additional 14 days. The reason? The person in the Kinko's store misread the post code that was clearly marked on the package and put the wrong postcode on the label they printed. Their system is postcode/zip code based.

Don't give up hope just yet, and if it still doesn't arrive after a month, take them to court for the full value, even if they say the maximum they cover is X. You had a contract with them to do a job and they failed. The law is on your side even if their small print isn't.

Edited to add "International Express service". Where is the destination? If it crosses a border, you have customs to contend with and that can be an extra 10 to 14 days.

The trick is to take them to small claims court. They have three choices: pay to send a lawer to represent them, settle with you outside of court, or not show up resulting in a default judgement against them which, if they don't pay it, will eat into their credit rating. They usually take the settle option.

But, wait a few weeks. FedEx has a remarkable record of finding missing packages.

Exactly. FedEx can get the package there overnight, but if Customs takes two weeks to clear it, then there's nothing FedEx can do.

Sorry to hear this. Is happening too much lately.

Over the last few years, FedEx seems to be the worst for stolen/lost packages.

UPS is a close second for lost/stolen.

Along with a few other makers, I use USPS Express overnight with NO problems for over 12 years. It's a federal offence to tamper/steal a USPS package, something to keep in mind.

That a good idea Don. Overnight packages are scanned at every step and don't stay in one place long enough to be messed with.

Another method is USPS registered mail. This is especially useful when you are insuring a high-dollar item. The package is signed for by each person who touches it, and is locked up at each new facility. Takes a little longer, but is their most secure method of transport, AND insurance is MUCH cheaper because of the security involved. It's about all I use these days.

I'm sorry to hear about this. International shipping always giveme an anxiety attack. When I ship within the US I use USPS Priority if it's under $1000.00 and Registered Mail if it's over. Where I live there is no USPS overnite!

Hopefully they'll find the package.

This the reason I use the USPS and request USPS money orders as payment. I am not as "Big League" as Don "Express" Hanson III, and find that Priority Mail, with a signature confirmation or insurance, is a great service.

Thanks for all the excellent advice guys! I'm hopeful that it'll turn up but not confident.

Priority is good to, I've shipped over 4000 pounds of W2 steel (most Priority) through my very small rual PO with no probs.

Win, you can ship Express mail from any PO but in your case it would be 2nd day instead of overnight.

Also with Express, you get $500 insurance included in the price.

For years my Post Master said I couldn't send Express mail from my one room, one person Success Post Office, so I would drive 22 miles to the next PO. He retired and now I send all my packages, even Express from the Succes PO. Found out he was just lazy and didn't want the extra paper work.

You can send USPS Express from your one room apartment, much less from Success, MO. Sign up at www.usps.com for their 'Click-n-Ship' online service. Pay online and print your barcoded label on your printer. Hand it to your local postman.

But, then again, he may be the source of your problems..... :p :grumpy:

Coop, you are correct and a great service but you wouldn't want to do that way out here where I live. Our rual carriers can be unreliable. This is one reason I have a PO Box.
