Stolen Knives!

Cheese Louise, that really stinks.
I will keep an eye out for them. If they show up on the net it'll probably be ebay...

As far as UPS goes, our guy(s) couldn't be better. Always rings the bell and if we're not home he'll leave the package with a neighbor. And we get the neighbor's packages too.
A cold soda on a hot day goes a long way ;)

I have actually had the opposite problem with fedex. Items being shipped to my home address that required a signature were not delivered because nobody was home to sign for them. After two failed attempts to deliver they were going to send the item back to the sender!!!! This was so frustrating, only the sender could authorize delivery to a different address (like my office) and I could not determine what time of day they would try to deliver.

HATE THE SIGNATURE!!!!!!!

UPS!! :barf:

I've had similar experiences with those A-Holes. After hearing this I'll do my damndest not to do business with them ever again. I'm so very sorry to hear about this. It really puts a bad taste in my mouth. Best of luck with them and again, very sorry to hear this.

First, thanks to all who took the time to respond in the GB&U and in the Blade Discussion forum. This one reply will cover the responses in both areas.

I do appreciate your concern and kind words.

Insurance is a tricky issue - especially when you are working with UPS who are notorious for trying to weasel out of paying claims no matter the circumstances.

However, I have to take it up the gazebo and I have refunded my customer in full- now I will hammer it out with UPS and their underwriter. (Also with the help of my Uncle Oscar….the lawyer)

To quickly respond to just a few points.

LARRY B.- you ask a very good question- if I bought and paid for $3525.00 of insurance and UPS didn’t honour the signature requirement, then why don’t I simply get a cheque from them for $3525.00?
Here is the answer- (as Tom from NGK said) they will only refund me what I "paid" for the items and I need to prove that. Fortunately, as I am a formal business, I do have receipts from all the suppliers/Knifemakers so I can prove my cost. Nevertheless, the cerebral question is, WHY DOES UPS TAKE INSURANCE PREMIUMS FOR $$$$ THAT THEY HAVE NO INTENTION OF RESPECTING. My answer to that" "Why do you think they call it "BROWN"?.... Therefore, taking out full insurance with UPS is nothing more than a fraud in my opinion. Larry B- thanks for your input here- I appreciate it.

FARAMIR- In another “BROWN” moment- I had a previous loss with them on a $375.00 William Henry knife- that package completely vanished at their Louisville hub. In one of my conversations with their insurance adjuster, he told me that they saw a similar knife at Wal-mart for $20.00 so that was all they were giving me. However, after a quick phone call to my UPS account representative telling her to come to my office, take back her “UPS LP2844” thermal label printer, and close my account, my case was resolved and I received my $375.00.

TIM8557- My UPS driver here is a wonderful guy- we have an understanding and he NEVER leaves any packages without a signature. I am in no way making any accusatory comments towards the UPS drivers etc. They have their policies and that is that. I ship with whichever carrier my customer designates.

COSMO- Absolutely correct- but although that system may be a pain in your ass, at least you get your merchandise.

Not all couriers only honour the wholesale price- actually, although I do not use them, the Post Office is the best (from what I hear) at claims. Whatever insurance you purchase is recovered. May take some time- anyway, this is only what I have been told.

FedEx one lost a package of mine- within 2 weeks I had a cheque for the entire invoice/insured amount - not merely my cost- and I got a nice fruit basket.

UPS drivers have the authority to override and leave packages without a signature if they deem the neighborhood safe. According to UPS, they would rather pay insurance claims than have to redeliver (This is an actual quote from them). Makes sense as long as they continue to take the premium for $3525.00 and only have the intention to pay back the cost. That is a business within a business.

In general, if you consider the millions of packages that are soaring all over North America daily, the loss percentage is miniscule- just hurts when one has to take a hit in the wallet. Nevertheless, this is business, as I have to take the good with the bad.

Thanks very much to all of you who have offered to watch out for these knives- they are all quite unique and should they turn up in a pawn shop or on eBay etc, I would really appreciate knowing about it.

Money aside, let’s catch the thieves.

Take care, Neil

the driver..did he take a lie detector test?? sounds fishy to me!!

Hey Neil,

I live in the Omaha area, and go to some of the local knife and gun shows, I'd be happy to print out the listing of your blades, and give it to dealers next time I'm at a show...Also, I can give you a list of the pawn shops in Omaha, very likely were these will show up. Have you contacted the Omaha PD? I know that they fingerprint everyone who sells something to a pawn shop, so if it were to turn up, they would potentially be able to track said loser down. Here are a few contact numbers for you...I'd be happy to help on this end if you like.

Douglas County Sheriffs Office: (402) 444-7164
Omaha Police Dept
(402) 444-5600

Sorry...acidently posted too soon...

Here are some numbers for the pawn shops...Where in town did your customer live (might narrow down the pawn locations)

Cash America Pawn
(402) 453-5626

E Z Money Pawn Shop
(402) 731-8344

Sol's Jewelry & Loan
(402) 397-2845

Sol's should be your number one contact, as they have about 4-5 stores in town, and probally handle more stuff (particularly guns and knives) than all of the others combined!

Well best wishes, please contact me if you need any help in the area

thats all the pawn shops in omaha? lucky ya arent in austin i bet there is a hundred of them here lol.

Neil, I live in Omaha and I'm VERY FAMILIAR with all of the places to buy knives. I'm going to two different places this week to check on some knives that I have on consignment. I'll print out these pictures and hand them over to the owners of each place so that they can identify your knives if they just happen to come across them. Also, I'll call around today to see if some of the other places happen to see them. I've come up with about 46 places in the Omaha area that a person could "dump" knives off. Email me if you need any more help.

Very sorry to hear of this, Neil. I have purchased some wonderful Chris Reeve knives from you, and it was a pleasure dealing with you.

With regards to UPS leaving packages...

I live in Canada, and have ordered knives and outdoor gear from the US on several occasions. I have learned not to pay the customs/brokerage fee ahead of delivery (UPS phones when the package is at Customs, and offers to serve as a broker). If the customs fees are not paid, the driver will not leave the package. The one time that I paid the fees over the phone to the UPS broker by credit card, the package containing several hundred dollars worth of outdoor clothing from Filson's in Seattle was left on my front porch while I was at work. Thankfully it was not stolen.

I would rather drive to the UPS depot to pay the fees and pick up the package.

Hardly all of the pawn shops, just some of the major ones...there are probally 50+ in the metro area...although not anything like Texas (Dallas/Houston) There seemed to be a pawn shop every 10 feet...;o)

Anyhow...I have the pictures, and will keep them handy while browsing!

That sucks. I absolutely hate UPS. I have had two packages of knives and thousands of dollars in 4x4 parts left on my front porch, no signature, no nothing. Unless you owe them for brokerage they just dont seem to care.

Bruce, you might want to bring those pictures with you to the Freemont Gun Show that's coming up this spring. Off hand I don't know the dates of the gun show, you probably know more about them than I do.
