I'm sorry if this isn't posted in the correct place but I need to get this spread around.

Please, I need your help.

A deluxe Marsh Melancholy was stolen from a USPS Express package this week. It left San Jose, CA Tuesday for delivery in Ohio on Wednesday. It finally showed up Saturday, envelope torn open, box torn open, knife missing. However the other small contents of the package were intact.

I'll offer a reward for the return of this knife. No questions asked.

Thanks for the help Bladeforums

This is the knife:

Wow...that's unfortunate. Was it torn during transit or was it sitting on your porch when the knife was stolen? Would anyone you know have known what was in the package, thus prompting them to steal it or was it just a random hit that happened to fall upon you?

That aside, I'll keep an eye out for it. That's a gorgeous knife and I would be infuriated if someone stole something of that nature from me.

Stolen or Improperly Packed and Lost in Shipping? What's an "envelope" got to do with shipping such a large and possibly expensive knife?

The Insurance should cover such a loss?

It was inside a small flat rate box which was taped up. That was inside an express envelope which was completely sealed in tape. The outer, tape covered envelope was torn open, and the box inside was opened as well but not torn. I can't see how it wasn't deliberately removed.

I was handed the open, empty package sealed up in a "We Care" plastic bag at the post office when I went to pick it up

That's insane how they handed you a torn open envelope at the post office. Did the counter clerk say anything? Did you look at them and ask, "REALLY????"

Because I would have went postal (no pun intended). Then again that's why I always insure my knives if they're over $500. There are so many potential risks of it being compromised along the way to the buyer. Even if it reaches the buyer if you happen to have a shady one.... they could always claim they never received it. When I'm buying a knife on the other hand.... if the seller doesn't insure it.... it's on them.

If I don't receive the knife.... I am filing a claim.... PERIOD.

Wow sorry to hear that. I have heard of items disappearing from their parcels before while in transit through the system but having something removed from a sealed flat rate box and then an express envelope as well - you should definitely be taking this up with your local post office. As The Logical One said, make your complaint as soon as possible and as loudly as possible.

Some items do get recovered. Best of luck.

Happens all the time. I had to confront the mail man because he was reading my magazines and delivering them a week late.

You should of confronted them and inquired about the package then and there. They should not be handing you the torn package without any explanation....especially it appears to be blatantly torn open and stolen.

Even without insurance, doesn't the postal service bear responsibility when something in their possession is stolen in-route? I can see losing something, but thievery?

I would be beside myself if this happened to me. Long shot:
Talk to the USPS and try to find what location the package was at when they noticed it was opened. If you can fond that much info, you can call that specific location and possibly have the managers check to see if this happens frequently in their station/area.
This is a shame, and pretty sad to see things like this happening. Best of luck and I hope you can find something out.

Course I got no idea..........but it would seem postal inspectors or someone would open an investigation. Having a thief handling packages isn't good for anyone.
Did you inquire into what your options are? Thanks.

Sorry to hear about your loss... This sort of stuff is really unnacceptable in my opinion, especially since it was sent via USPS... :thumbdn::thumbdn::thumbdn:

If something like that happened here in Canada with Canada Post I'd go ape shite; they're Federally regulated and are supposed to be held to the highest standards but that might not mean much anymore. :grumpy:

Not that it means much but I'll keep an eye open for it on Instagram; people there have no qualms about showing off knives they've got so maybe it'll show up there.

Postal Inspectors.?.?.? They actually have those on the payroll???
Ive filed 3 claims GOT reimbursed..
I HATE POSTAL THIEVES
I TAPE THE S$#@ out of my knives in many layers and the box...
THE postal employees have seconds to cut a box or an envelope open..I MAKE THEM pass mine up because
I TAKE THE EXTRA time whether its a $1000 knife or $150 knife to DOUBLE AND TRIPLE LAYER the knife and tape--tape--tape..
I mean NO DISRESPECT--
WHY MAY I inquire
NO INSURANCE..
I INSURE Every item..
COVER YOUR A#@

It will take a bit to see if they will reimburse you..Im guessing
NO--Hate to burst your bubble BUT IF you chose not to insure.. Thats on you ..
Sorry for the loss

Theres no way the package could have been sent like that right? If the package was dropped off open would they send it back to the sender?

There isn't really enough info here on the transaction. However, If you bought this knife through paypal GOODS, this theft is not on you. The seller is fully responsible for the item until it reaches you. If the seller didn't insure the item, it is completely their loss.

Folks, this is why you should always do paypal goods, selling or buying. And if you are selling something, insure it!

Hope the knife shows up OP!
