I recently participated in Stompers Bushcrafter passaround. I have been on a Kephart and Bushcrafter kick lately, and was keen to try this model out. I own two of his models, a Kephart, and a Hikers Backup, and have been more than happy with those.
When I saw that John was going to be posting the Bushcrafter, I knew that I had to sign up. As said, I have been on a bushcrafter kick. I have come to be a big fan of O1, and was excited to check out the knife. Cocobolo is more my choice of woods, but I had no problems with the passaround handle.
When I received the knife, my excitement was brought down a notch by the handle size. Know this. I have big paws for hands. For anyone else, the handle size would be fine. For me, to place a custom order from John, I would have no worries, he made the handle big on my Kephart. Just a reminder, if you have big paws, ask for a larger handle. After use, I adapted to the size of the handle, and continued on. After getting accustomed to the size of the handle, I started to enjoy the shape of the handle.
I had visions of building a shelter, cutting up deer steaks, all around fun time. Unfortunately, I had other obligations, like cutting firewood all weekend. So, I tried my hand at a little bark removal. I had no problem getting curls, and whittling a few walking sticks, or starting on them at least, posed no problem.
Inside, I cut up a few sausages for breakfast, no problems. I did not carry the knife in its sheath on my belt, but did carry it outside in my pocket, very comfortable.
I did want to take a few pics, but my camera took a crap on me, so I am using Johns pics with permission. I have recently traded into a Bushcrafter made by John, and I am excited to get it. Johns interpretation of the bushcrafter does not leave anything to desire, except more of his knives. Great craftsmanship, at great prices.
