One of the things that I have not quite figured out about knapping is parallel flaking. I can chip edges fine and make a decent arrowhead, but that is provided that the material I'm working with is the right thickness to begin with. I'm looking for some information or resources regarding parallel flaking of stone to get that thickness. I gather one possible technique is to abrade a "shelf" on the stone and then use that as a point of contact to thin the stone down.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Mike
