Stone Suggestion????

Not sure why you want more than your sharpmaker, really with CBN/Diamond and UF stones it is pretty much perfect for nearly every application

I don't feel like I can ever get a knife sharp on the sharpmaker.

if you are not getting them sharp, i can only suggest you may be doing something incorrectly.

do you have a strop? a strop like leather, denim, balsa wood etc, with compound applied will remove the burr on the edge. the wrong angle or too much pressure strop'ing can also round the edge.

Hi,
not even sharp enough to slice paper?
never raise a burr? or raise just on one side?

The common "problems" with sharpmaker is
some knives have very dull blades
and edge angles greater than 20 degrees per side (highest angle setting),
so it would take an a lot of passes (hours) on the medium/brown rods
to get that sharp

one solution is increase the angle by tilting or shimming the sharpmaker

another is wrap coarse sandpaper around the rods at 15dps setting
and change the edge angle on the blade

Try this pretty good debugging list of steps here for getting silly sharp with the sharpmaker Sharpening Curriculum

Thanks for the information. I haven't put the time in to get good with it.

Here is what I normally do. I have a local sharpener that I pay to sharpen my kitchen and other blades.

After that I usually just touch up my knives using the round ceramic round made by EdgePro.

When I can't touch them up anymore I take them back to the Sharpener.

I want to learn how to do it myself because it's expensive.

Truthfully, I am hesitant to try to sharpen my knives because they are expensive blades and I don't want to mess them up!

Get a $3 paring knife, practice sharpening it with what you have, or what ever you get.
When you can get it screaming sharp 10 times in a row from butter knife dull, you'll be ready to try the others.
