So here's a question or two for those doing acid stone wash finishes. I'm having an issue with the stone wash affecting the crisp edges of the makers mark. If I do the makers mark after acid, then the clean up takes away some of the acid finish.

1. What is your order of progression for makers mark etch, acid etch, stone wash?
2. I guess length of acid etch is pretty much relative to the strength of solution, but how long do you stone wash? I'm using the larger bowl type tumbler from HF.

Thanks all...

(Based on what I've heard) I don't think you need the actual cutting action provided by a tumbler. I think you can place the knife (after etching) in a sealed container with the acid solution and stones/marbles, and shake by hand.

Or for a more aggressive effect, you could stone wash in your tumbler, etch, clean-up the etch area, and touch-up stone wash effect as I describe above.

I etch for about 10 mins in ferric vinegar water mixture then hit it with WD-40 and into the tumbler (I have a brass tumbler) for about 3 hours, I use rounded river rocks from the dollar store I think..I tried the triangular media from HT but it made too many gouges in the blade. After that I clean up with windex and acetone then etch makers mark. I clean up makers mark with windex and quick wipe then a shot of WD-40.
