I'm working on tracking down domestic equivalents to Japanese Sword Polishing Stones. I'm having excellent results with a few of my "finds" and moderate results with others.

For example, sawn Picture Jasper (diamond bladed saw) makes a nice razor stone, but isn't very aggressive. The same goes for Pennsylvania Bluestone.

What I want to get a hold of, and hope that someone here might help with, is silica shale. If anyone has a suggestion or a source, I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks!

If your open to water stones you can buy good synthetic stones on sites like ebay and if your willing to order from Japan you can get synthetic sharpton water stones. The sharpton stones are a great price for the size an quality of the stone.

Thanks Dan,
I've got a pile of synthetic water stones now and I love them. It's the allure of the high dollar natural stones from Japan that has me hunting like this.
