Stonewash DIY idea - Your thoughts ?

Hello friends.

Ok here's my idea.

I want to try this on a Kershaw blade I have.

I have a bench grinder.

My thought is this - Take a smallish coffee can, drill hole in bottom so can is attached to grinder plate ( term ? ). Media added ( was considering washers , gravel , small nuts - metal not food :) ) knife blade added, lid Gorilla taped on can and then give it an hour to see what happens.

I know the edge will be at least very dulled , I am hoping not damaged though.

The blade in question is a SG2 from the JYDII flipper , the grind and tip are very thin which is my concern in possible bending or chipping badly.

So this is where I ask the experts their opinion on Stonewashed finish for knife blades , if any of you have a comment or thought I would really appreciate it :)

Thanks and have a great weekend !

I would think the can would spin so fast that there wouldn't be a lot of tumbling. Also, at that speed, the balance would be way of and probably damage the grinder and possibly fling the can and blade off.

Make sure no one is in the building if you fire up this idea...

All the tumblers I have ever played with are sub 60 RPM.

Tumbles typically rotate at a very slow rpm, at high rpms the material just sticks to the side and will not tumble, also will probably fly across the room. Stonewash is a lighter treatment which is done with softer materials than bolts and rocks, I think you would highly damage your blade. Also remember that your nice thin, sharp edge will be the first to go.

Hunt around and I am sure you will find a tumbler in a yard sale or flea market for pennies on the dollar. For media I look more towards what is used for sand blasting, nut shells, glass beads sand that sort of thing

Ask Sam Salvati what happens when you turn a normally slow spinning object at faster speed!!!!!!

DEaTH!!!!!!!!!! Or you come too damn near it for your own good. Tumbler goes slow both in rotation and time the piece is in there, time is your friend.

Ahh ok.

Thanks very much for the advice guys , I think you are all right about the grinder turning too fast.

Maybe i'll try one of those rock tumblers they sell at Toys R Us , sounds like it might work.

Thanks again ! :)
