Stonewash?

I posted this on another forum, but would like some input from you guys as well.

I am trying to get a stonewash finish on one of my knives.

I bought a Lyman cartridge tumber and some of the polishing media. It works quite well to polish up a finish.

I was wondering what media you guys are using to get a stonewash finish?

Also what grit do you take the knife up to before using the stonewasher, and how long do you stonewash for?

I bought some fish tank gravel and it just seems to polish the blade without giving the stonewash effect.

Thanks in advance.

Stone washing is a tricky process.
It is a timed prcess that requires several steps.
I suggest you call a vibratory machine sales outfit.
They will help if you buy media from them.

Use ceramic tumbling media. Experiment with the media shape and grit to get different effects.

HOLY thread resurrection...

I'd rather bring this one back to life than start another one.

What is better: a vibratory tumbler or a rotary tumbler?
Do you have to use ceramic media? I see on amazon different grits and types.
Should you cover/coat the blade edge so the process doesn't dull it down or do you just re-sharpen it when it's done?
How do you protect etchings/engravings when doing this?
