What is it exactly?
Does it add anything to the blade other than asthetics?
Thanks...

This process is done using a tumble deburr machine or a vibratory tumbler most often. It uses several types of media . There are ceramics , steel and pastes that are combind to make the blade surface change with the action of the machine. A few knifemakers use a cement mixer. Others use a semi high cost machine to get this done.

Stone washing takes off the high point on the blades and semi closes the pours or creates a abrasive or burnishing action on the steel.
I the longer the blade is in the tumbler the more of this process it does.
Different media will produce different results.

If you plan on doing it yourself try some samples and different polishing pastes.

If you use steel media it will burnish the blade .

Leave stock on the tip !!! This process will round it off if left in to long.

This process is done most often wet with a slurry tupe action..
