Like I said, it has never happened to me in 30 years of living in this city, carrying a knife every single day. Over that time, my EDC's have ranged from a SAK to a Case stockman (lots of those
) to my current BM705 (love that axis lock). All have been relatively small, partly for comfort and partly because of LEO paranoia.
I work in a place that employs lots of African-American and Latino young people, all art school graduates and middle class, all of whom have stories of being stopped and frisked for no apparent reason, or because they "looked like somebody".
On the other hand, half of the knife collectors in the city seem to be NYPD!
Anyway, in the event of a confrontation with the cop on the beat, I'll be polite, as you suggest, and try to see things from his or her perspective. (While I'm getting a badge number
