Not sure if this is the right place for this, but I wanted to share this interesting bit of knowledge.

I just got a Busse Kerambit, (only mention of knife in this thread;)) and of course I was spinning it on my finger. . .

Naturally I stuck the wide sharp tip over ¼” deep into the heel of my hand. No pain, but plenty of blood. I pulled it out and applied direct pressure to the bleeding.

It was oozing pretty good, and I had better things to do than hold the cut closed all night. (like drinking)

I remembered what this old guy at my work told me about stopping bleeding, and I used ground black pepper on the cut.

Like magic, the bleeding was stopped.

Anyone heard about this before? I was skeptical when I heard about it, but it works great.

My guess is that the finer the pepper, the quicker it works. The stuff I used was pretty fine.

Now go cut yourselves so you can test it out for yourself . . .

Another dandy is Afrin nasal spray. It works by constricting blood vesels. The trick is that you have to get it into the wound and if it's a gusher, you won't be able to get the nasal spray in.

Oh, and was that fresh-ground pepper?

i have a mix that i usually use although i have no idea if this is legal or very safe but i've been doing this for years...

one day playing with my knife i sliced my finger open. naturally it bled like a mofo and i needed it to stop bleeding quickly cause my girlfriend was freaking out...

so my dad (old army corporal) went to the medicine cabinet and found some anti-biotics i had left over from a previous throat infection. he pulled a few apart and the white powder (amoxcilin) was gathered in a small bowl... after he mixed in some salt and stirred it all together... after he put the powder on my cut... stopped bleeding with a snap of a finger almost instantaneously... after that rapped some gauze around it and it healed very quickly...

now i keep a small bag of the stuff in my bob/gobag and have used it to treat my cuts ever since...

i've done this to treat the majority if my cuts for the past 3-4 years and its worked like a charm...

cheers ^^

Ha ha! :D Actually the stuff I used was much finer than table grind, it was like a powder almost.

Do you know what chemical in the Nasal spray is the active ingredient that constricts the vessels?

From the sound of it, maybe the key is just using any non-toxic and biodegradable powder?

What is the clotting agent used medically made from?

I use super glue I have someone squezze my pressure point near my armpit and it stops the bleading then squezee super glue. It lasts longer that a bandaid.

Don't remember the name but there is a commercial preparation available that is designed for that !!

I've heard of using pepper as a tempory stop leak for radiators, but never for humans. (=

I have a bottle of the puffer/stopper from a feed store that works great...I never really spent the time to see what's in it, but it works wonders when dehorning cattle, and does pretty good on people also.

Back in my youth [stone ages ? ] we used it in the old Buick to seal radiator leaks. This is before pressurized systems & was a very cheap fix. When the pressure cap was introduced to downsize the cooling system ,the ideal fix was oatmeal [ sparingly ] & then Bar's leaks . We said that product was rabbit pills & snuff spit but it worked for less than a silver certificate. Waterpumps were lubed by a grease fitting then.

Oxymetazoline hydrochloride

For light cuts i use paper to be rolled for cigarettes. Mike, thanks for sharing the pepper trick, i will certainly have to use it.

don't they have syptic powder that's used for shaving nicks?

When I was just starting to shave (about 29 years ago) my Father always had this white "steptic" pencil in the bathroom drawer. All you had to do was wet the pencil and touch it to the nick, and it stopped instantly.

Did a quick google and found "Nick Relief Styptic Powder" at http://www.classicshaving.com. They also have liquids and pencils.

Just yesterday I noticed a review a product called "QR" n this month's Wood magazine. It forms an artificial scab in a few seconds. It uses a hydrophilic polymer and potassium salt. It's used in hospital ERs, and is avaiable for home use. More info at www.biolife.com.

BTW - You guys ought to visit the classic shaving site. They have the goods for the most close and comfortable shave possible. The shaving oil, shaving cream, and after shave balm from Truefitt & Hill are highly rated. They're expensive, but your lady friends will greatly appreciate it! ;)

Knife content - Check out the straight razors at the classic shaving site!
