Stop carrying my knife, or Quit my job?

that if you are not from 'his' country' and don’t speak 'his' language (as he put's it) You are not as productive as someone who is

i ran into this last summer.i was ordering a camera over the phone from a retailer in new york.a foreigner answered.he was constantly trying to upsell me.he wanted me to buy more expensive lenses and camera bodies,so i hung up.i called back later to confirm that the order did not go through and got a thorough bitching at from him.i then called the customer service dept and told them of it (i could hear him yelling in the back ground).i also contacted shutterbug magazine and told them about it (i dont think they allow them to advertize anymore).
then i went somewehre localy and bought it.
but all that is beside the point.foreigners come here to the US our country, they cant even speak english, and give us hell.i say kick em out.if i wanted some **** from a foreigner,i would go to their country to get it.i shouldnt have to put up with alien bull****.not in this country.

The "key" knife someone mentioned is called a Utili-Key. Unfortunately it does not include pliers, but it's still a handy little gadget.

Jadd,

As several others have said, keep this job until you get the next one. In the meantime carry concealed or ... Lots of ideas here.
Good Luck!

It's definitely a bummer to be stuck in a lousy job with a lousy boss (been there, done that, but at least in my case it paid well -- or did until I walked out one night). Even more of a bummer when you live in a hotbed of economic opportunity like Auburn, CA.

Boriqua and others have offered some good advice. Keep your job until you find a new one, keep your knife in your pocket, and just use the "tools" provided by your employer. Remember, you're paid by the hour -- what's your rush???

Forget OSHA, they won't help you. The State Labor Board is good (I used them a couple of times), but they'll only help you receive/recover wages owed, which isn't the problem here. Some employers automatically fight all unemployment claims as a matter of policy (the payroll companies that many businesses use actually offer this as a service), which can delay your money. And if you're fired for using your knife, there's a chance that EDD will find that you were fired for cause (no $$ for you).

Move out of california the first opportunity you get. this will save alot of future problems with knives and other things we all tend to like.

Quiting is easy and don't recommend doing that, only as a very last resort. Things are sometimes worse at other places and you will need to deal with it.
Sounds like a rough individual you work for, hardcase, you might want to have a private talk with him about just what he expects from you? and ask him what you can do to help the situation? This will put him on the spot because he probably would never expect you to come to him and try and talk sense, BUT you really need to listen to him and make the attempt to see his side of the story. Being upfront helps in a lot of ways, just make it as professional as you can, and heck what do you have to lose? You are intending to quit anyway? This might turn things around...if not, explain that you will need to look elsewhere for work. But as others have mentioned look before quiting is a smart move...

Find another job if you can. You work in the
most dangerous occupations in the country for the least wages. Look it up if you doubt it.
If at all possible get the hell out of there as quick as possible.

My point was to make the employer fire him by refusing to perform an "unsafe" job function without the proper tool (like the box cutters that they tried to use). Definitely don't carry or use the knife and get fired for violating a company policy, which you have been warned for (did he do it in writing?). Then you're hosed.

And it will definitely take some time to get the money, but it will come. At least in IL, fighting an unemployement claim, or in any way fighting an employee rights issue, is an exercise in futility, so most (WAY most) don't bother fighting them. IL Dept of Labor started paying right away on unemployment for me, didn't take me long enough to find new work for the old boss to fight. They did take a year before I got the hearing for my withheld final check, but the stated kicked butt for me. Scolded my boss like a schoolgirl, right in front of me! Money and a floor show!

Your a valuable human being...as the old song goes tell him to "Take this job and shove it.....I ain't workin' here no more"

Welcome to BFC Jadd!!!

If you can afford to and it won't adversely affect your life.........Tell the boss to "KISS YOUR WHITE A$$"!!!!

When I was about 21, I was working for a surgical instrument manufacturer. It was a factory/machine shop. I was hired to be a QC inspector because of my prior job history. I did that job for about 2 weeks when they asked me to fill in on the assembly line for a couple of hours.
Well, that turned in days. It was hell. I didn't take that job for that.
So, one day the plant manager catches me glancing over at the wallclock and runs over to me and yells that if I need to know what time it is he would tell me, otherwise I didn't need to know.
I sat there for about 1 second, then I stood up & killed the emergency breaker for the entire assembly line. I told the boss that it was breaktime. He didn't know what to say.
Everyone stopped work, looked around and all they saw was me holding up my middle finger as I exited the building.

Damn that felt good.

I'd do it again in a second. It opened up some free time for job hunting which only raised me up the "corporate ladder."

For my knife....I'd already be long gone!!!

No regrets!!!!

Isolate whether the attitude is aimed at you or your knife. You really need to sort this out. You possible future employer will check with your most recent one. You don't want a "He carries a scary knife" reference. Good-bye job offer.

Ask other employees if they have had any complaints about the knives they use to open boxes.

Maybe your knife looks scary to him. Maybe it looked scary to a customer and they complained.

Some people are genuinely afraid of knives and the people who carry and use them.

Carry the smallest possible knife to do the job.

Sorry to have to say this, but lose the "I wouldn't consider carrying any other knife" attitude. That will almost certainly lead to more trouble down the line.

Raptor, you're my hero.

Sounds to me like your boss, Jadd, is an arrogant, SOB. He wouldn't happen to be one of those Arab guys whould he?

I'm still young, 21, so this may not be the best solution, but I'd make sure he knew "his place" when I left. If the pay sucks, the job is degrading, you're not happy, and worst of all, you can't carry...I'd tell him to go back where he came from and give him a little taste of racism right back. Shouldn't be too difficult to find a better job in 2 weeks to less. Good luck.

Keep in mind, a worker who doesn't care about losing his job can have a lot of fun.

What TomW said is true (no surprise there).
You are in the most dangerous job there is in the US.

I am 45 and the first thing employers look for in an interview (at least the last two I went on) are breaks in Employment). I think there is a feeling that unexplained breaks can be an indication of instability.

Think before you burn bridges at a job. Leaving any job no matter how bad on good terms is the way to go. Even if you feel that you have to swallow your pride. Those type of actions can paint pictures that you may not want to be seen in a few years. When I got out of college I was told that the reason I got my first job was from a ref. of a previous job's supervisior (wheat shoveller on a barge).

Letting you ego get in the way of business seldom is a good idea.

I would suggest that you first check the laws regarding employment in your state. Sometimes, employers are permitted to specified dress codes, contraband, etc.

Is there a written policy from your employer covering this matter. Where I work, the policy says that no employee can bring and illegal knife on company property. In this case you would need to know which knives are illegal.

If there are no laws or company polices covering your knife, you probably are on solid ground. Now any employer can still terminate you but you may have recourse.

Another thing you might try is just tell your employer you can do certain tasks in your job without the proper equipment. That is hard to argue with. At least your employer might get you a box cutter or utility knife. Besides, why use your knife which is your own property to do work for your employer?

But it sounds to me like your employer may already have you marked. I'd be looking for a new job and move on when you can. And if there is no required resignation time period (some employers requires 1, 2, 3, 4, weeks notice), AFTER you have gotten a new job, spring your resignation on him at the last minute preferably during a busy time or when you are the sole or one of the few workers present.

I work in a convenience store, where I am constantly using the knife for boxes, bag's, and plastic strap's..
So guys...Should I tell my boss to get a life, or leave my baby at home?
Don’t be shy on encouraging me to quit the job...it sucks anyways.

Is the convenience store part of a chain? If so, you can report any racist comments higher up the corporate ladder. There are real consequences - and corporations don't like EO lawsuits.

If he is indeed making these comments all of the time, carry a tape recorder with you and leave it running - it's easy to edit out everything but what you need.

As a side note, let's not use this incident to promote racism or reverse-racism on the forums, guys. I appreciate the concerns you guys have, but this isn't the place to be expressing them.

Im glad Spark broke in with sense. (As he often does.) One of the beautiful things about this medium of communication is that we are judged without the benefit of sight. SOoo its about what we say (or write) and how we say it. I have wonderful exchanges here with people who I have been communicating with for almost two years now. I think I have a sense of who they are and Im sure many have an idea of the person that I am. Doesnt matter to them or me what color our A.S.S.es are.

A-holes are not exclusive to a certain color, race or religion. Ive found examples of em in every size, shape and color. As well as stupid people, smart ones and so on. If the guys boss is an A-hole then so be it. Hes an a-hole. Lets leave the race card out.
