Ken Cook,
Yes, giving in is much less painful. That is, until the credit card bill comes along. Practical use,
I know how you feel. I have always liked knives but last summer I became an addict. You will soon be spending 3 or 4 hundred a month on knives or more. And to think that it all started with just a PECK and an SAK.

Many years ago I was camping with two friends----one knowledgeable about knives and me, one not. The one without a clue innocently asked "You like knives don't you? You must have, what, a half dozen?" The other guy almost fell of his log laughing. When he regained his composure he remarked "He's got a half dozen ON HIM!"

I know what you mean Pratical Use. This knife buying can get out of control fast, as bad as guns, maybe worse because the knives seem cheaper, but then I wind up buying more.
It was a long winter here in Alaska, and I bought a large Sebenza, a Ken Onion Kershaw, speed safe, Busse Basic #7, a Dozier Professional Guide, and two Fallkniven (S1 and A1). I like them all, but I need more.

Unfortunately, my wife met me at the top of the stairs the other day wearing a new ring on her finger. She said something like, "You go ahead and buy your knives, I'm starting to collect jewelry." Needless to say, we have reached a compromise. Hey, maybe I could get a second job, one that pays me cash; she wouldn't need to know...

Listen to the voices!!! Buy a Spyderco, BM, maybe an Onion, and another Spyderco. Then maybe a SEBENZA!!!

When I grow up, I will get myself a SEBENZA!!

And then there are Custom knives when you really get into it.

I regret to inform you that, at this time, medical science has absolutely no cure for the 'steel virus.'

Symptoms can generally be kept in control by purchasing knives regularly. Some patients have noted more long lasting relief by saving up their money and buying fewer, but more expensive knives. Others report that a custom knife can relieve symptoms for the longest time.

I would suggest that the new flat ground Sebenza may be very therapeutic in your case.

Dude it is already too late! You are gooonnnee. But look at it this way you get to hang around with some of the coolest people you could ever meet! I am only a few steps on from you but have given in to the fever - plus here you may pick up some handy excuses err I mean reasons for purchasing a new blade. I am trying to think fast as I have until 5.30 to think of an excuse for my wife on my latest purchase - a lefty BM mini AFCK! "I NEED a left hander otherwise I'll keep cutting myself", "Its discontinued so it's a collectors item - it'll only increase in value." "I errr, uuhmm it's COOL look!" Seriously my wife is the coolest about my obsession errr I mean hobby.

Tell me about it! What started off as an interest in a Spyderco Endura, lead to the G10 models, then better and better knives up to a Microtech, MOD and Chris Reeve Sebi. Now I have a custom field knife on the way... Will it ever stop?

Every time I bought a knife, I used to tell myself that this was the perfect knife for me and that I would not buy another. Now I don't lie to myself...

Now clearly, I won't buy anymore......oh no, my hand is reaching for the telephone and the credit card....help........

Am I turning into one of "you people?"

How wonderful (I think), 27 posts to this thread and not a single person blamed me for his infection. I have had to listen to this complaint for over 30 years and now I know I am not alone. Just be glad that it does not take hundreds of dollars for a single handmade knife to scratch your itch. May you always be finding new knives that you must have.
all the best, A. G.

OK, so I went to the Doctor.

He asked what was wrong.

I said I was really on edge.

The point is, I said, let's cut right to the issue - I have this knife problem.

I said that I thought that any way I slice it, I'm in trouble.

He told be to get a grip.

I asked him not to talk about knives, and that I felt he should sharpen his skills.

Help I pleaded, I'm on the wire edge of trouble!!!!!!!!!

He said for me to cut it out right now.

I left his office and sat in my car fondling my AFCK.

I am in deep trouble.

Just think of it as retail therapy. That's what I tell myself anyway, every time I decide I need another Benchmade. Or another Sebenza. Trust me though, buying a Sebbie won't cure you. It will only make the sickness spread.
smile.gif
I remember the day my Sebenza arrived. It was the same day three new BMs came. I almost blacked out four times I was sweating and shaking so bad.

I love this obsess..., uh, I mean hobby. Yeah, right, hobby, sure.

Errors have been made. Others will be blamed.

Do NOT, repeat, NOT buy a Microtech OTF auto.
That is the point of no return.
If you fail to heed my advice, you will be forever doomed to an eternity of knife buying, fruitlessly searching for that elusive "next best example.

The voices are your friends, the voices are true. Don't fight it. Listen to them. And, BTW, you do not have to wait till you grow up to get a Sebenza...I didn't.

Believe it or not (not), it will balance out (yeah, right) in time. Until then...ENJOY!!!

Just buy expensive customs and you will not have that many knives in your collection.

Yes... that is what happened to me :)

Hi Ed!

Hi to you all!

I'm a knife-nut.

Your disease is in a beginning station. There are severaly tribes of this so called "disease" and the best thing is, here at Bladeforums.com you can get advise for most of them.

It can develop in different lines such as (no particular order):
Sebenzianista
Usual Suspect
Spyder-nut
Microholic
...
only to name a few.
You can become a general knife-nut (buys what he likes)or a custom-knife-nut (buys what he can afford:)).
In the worst case you get multiple exposured.

There are even some side-effects as collecting flashlights or other gadgets and gear.

Welcome!

PS.: I've been often thinking, what will happen if I find "the perfect knife" for me. Horrible I had no reason to buy another.

practical use, that story made me laugh hard.

I assume you aren't married cause then you get it from her at least the ones married to non- knife nuts like myself.

YOU NEED WHAT......ANOTHER ONE.......WHY DO YOU NEED A NEW KNIFE?

EXPLAIN TO ME SERIOUSLY WHY DO YOU NEED A NEW KNIFE? this one looks great see...I can do so much more with this one then 2 or 3 of my others so really it cuts back the amount of knives I really need.

ARE YOU GONNA SELL SOME OF YOUR KNIVES? well not really

then when she leaves the room you order your knife and hope she doesn't remember all own.

I am kind of glad she balances me out though, I think I would go into serious debt. I can't control myself.

Admit to owning 5 knives...then never, ever let her see more than 4 knives at a time. Head 'em up, spread 'em out, raw hide ('em). Tell her 'here are 4, I had 5 and got rid of one, so I can replace it with this wonderful new one...'
