Hello,

Im working on a design for a large "tactical" folder and had some questions in regards to the stop pin. Its going to be a frame lock(0.125), flipper, 4"+ blade. Is a nested stop pin stronger then a stop pin thats on the blade like a thumb stud? Lets say they are both going to be 0.1875. Is one better then the other?

Next question... I see the cut out on both sides of the locking bar on frame locks. Is there a reason? If so what are the pros and cons of both designs?

Thanks guys,

Chris

I don't think you could break a 3/16" stop pin no matter where you put it. In general though, the thumbstud stop pin is stronger because it is usually further away from the pivot than an internal stop pin. The biggest differences between the two styles is that using the thumbstud as a stop pin gives you more freedom in the shape of the tang but you need to account for the thumbstud resting against the handle in the closed position as well. Thumbstud stop pins can make a knife difficult to open if they are too close to the pivot pin so they are really only suited to large knives.

In my mind having the lock cut on the outside of the scale is slightly stronger because the contact angle is less but it's probably not enough to make a noticeable difference if any. A lot of guys like to put it on the inside to hide it and that works great for flat sided knives. I like a little more contour in my handles so I always put the cutout on the outside to give me the most room to thin the edges of the scales without affecting lock strength.
