Stop pins on friction folders and other folders with no liners

I designed a nice modernized friction folder for a friend of mine to make.

I think I have a possible problem: I'm accustomed to designing a stop pin to stop the blade in open and closed positions on a knife with metal liners.

For a traditional friction folder with no liners, using straight G10/Micarta (or stag?), the pressure of cutting will push on the stop pin, quickly boring out or otherwise enlarging the holes in the scales, right?

What do makers usually do?

Thanks for any tips.

Jon, no need to worry about wearing the scales out. I have one that I have carried for about 15 years and it still works fine and it gets used alot. You can mount the pin in the tang and notch the scales or use a backspacer and put a step in it for the tang to sit.I do them both ways.I am working on one now with wood scales and a backspacer. Here's a few

This is an old one I did many years ago with a stepped backspacer

Most designs I've seen stop on the handle material or back spacer, depending on handle design. I've never done one of these though, so that's all the help I can give.

I'm second :*(

I made a pretty crude friction folder with a handle of solid G10, and while this is no long term evaluation, I have used it, occasionally relatively hard, without having any pin movement problems.

Dave, AcridSaint, and James,

That's great to hear! Thank you for all the good advice.

I shall communicate that to my friend and we'll give it a shot that way. I'll post the results for your amusement when we're done of course.

Dave,
Yours are GORGEOUS! Wow. Having recently "grown up" (hah) I'm moving away from the frilly mall-ninja tac folders and more towards your kind of work. Thanks for sharing. :)

Take care,

Beautiful work guys. Some of the stag tines I have laying around got me to thinking about friction folders (need to make one for my future father in law for all the help he's been giving me getting my shop back up.)
