Stop wasting grease. The paint-brush technique

I just tap the tube on the blade and that usually puts enough on the surface with out having to actually squeeze any out. I know looking down a hose or gun barrel is just plain wrong :p, but you can also just squeeze it untill you see it appearing the the tube nossle and then dab it on. You also can get the grease back in the tube by using the air pressure in the squeezed tube to suck it back in.....The tube isn't the best but it isn't that bad either once you get to know it. :)

well I am doomed to be misunderstood on this one, but that's ok! :)

My whole point is not that you need a bunch of grease, or that there is not enough in the tube

MY POINT IS THAT WHEN YOU SQUEEZE A NEW CRK GREASE TUBE THAT IS NOT 100% FULL, IT CAN BE HARD TO GET JUST THE TINY DAB YOU WANT OUT OF IT IN A CONTROLLED FASHION. YOU CANNOT TELL HOW MUCH GREASE IS IN THE TUBE BECAUSE IT IS NOT CLEAR, SO IF YOU ARE A GOOF LIKE ME, ALL OF A SUDDEN THERE IS A BIG BLOB ON YOUR BLADE THAT YOU CANNOT PUT BACK IN THE TUBE, SO MUST BE THROWN AWAY.

Am I yelling? Love you guys! :p

Yes KidCongo, you are yelling loud enough and your point that grease applied then removed as excess is well taken. And thank you for the well done photos. Your pierced washers will also hold substantially more grease than my older, plain washer small Sebenza.

Think about it, how many thousands or tens of thousands of times would you have to open and close your Sebenza to put measurable wear on the bushing or blade? Lubrication makes the knife feel "nicer" on opening and closing but I have never had a Sebenza "seize" from lack of it. My biggest issue with lubrication is the way it "creeps" (oil is obviously worse than grease) out and can collect dust and lint over time. As a matter of fact, the ability to open the Sebenza and lube it properly rather than simply soaking the joint in oil then wiping off what you can, is a selling point in it's favor.

My syringe of CRK grease has begun to separate so I usually have to waste the first bit until I get to the still homogeneous part but I think I'll be terribly aged and infirm before I finally empty it.

Maybe I'll lube it again this weekend and photo the process.

Wow! Now this is what I call some very passionate CRK grease monkeys. LOL

I have been using the brush method for years. I put one tube in my glass container and use it till its gone, my container has a built in brush so no contamination. The grease that's in there now is around 1 1/2 years old and will probably last at least another 18 months. I work in a dusty environment (printing industry ) lots of chemicals so I clean my 21's about once every 2 months or so. It works better for me. More than 1 way to skin a cat.

Here's a pic!

After much consideration, I realized I just was not getting enough grease into my pivots, and disassembling the knife daily to add more grease was becoming a chore.

This is my solution:

The grease fitting is not the perfect thread, but if you press really really hard on the socket driver it will create new threads on the way in. Add several drops of loctite too!

I add about 3-4 pumps of grease at the start of each day. Excess is removed with a putty knife, and I line my pants pockets with Saran Wrap so there is no lint issue.

I keep this kit always on hand, in case i need a little extra during periods of hard use. That tube of Mobil Polyrex should last me at least a couple months.

There you go, no more taking your knife down to lubricate, and the grease fitting doubles as a finger guard when you are bearing down on the blade.....Too easy!:)

LMAO Priceless!!

kidcongo, that is freakin' hilarious.

BTW, most of my family wears contact lenses, and we accumulate dozens of the plastic lens cases that come with the bottles of solution. The screw-top ones would be great for this, as they are for many other uses, like camping, keeping a small amount of lotion, vaseline, etc. in your purse or glovebox, etc.

kidcongo, you mean you were kidding about this method of lubricating your Sebenza???????

I used the paintbrush method today for my Sebenzas first cleaning. It worked well and I will definitely continue doing it this way. By the way I was looking around for a cheap brush to use for this and found a 30 pack at Walmart for $1.00. So cheap I will just throw them away after each cleaning/lubing.

The paintbrush idea is simple and brilliant. I've been lubing my knives for years the wrong way. And putting the flouro grease into those little containers is great also.

BTW, first post here but not a newbie at all, just new to BF. Been collecting mid to high end knives for about 20 years.:)
Came over from CPF to see what BF is like.

Cheers!

Cool..Been awhile since I have been on CPF,..but welcome to BF :)

Hey KidCongo,
I went ahead and tapped my knife rather than force the grease nipple and used red loctite. The problem I have with this mod is that the grease nipple sticks out of my pants pocket and the girls won't stop looking at my bulge!!! ;)
