Storage case for knives?

This is a storage box my wife had commissioned from a friend who, as you can see, is a pretty fair woodworker. The top is hickory and the box is oak.

1) Are these foam-lined jobs a little abrasive on knives, or am I over thinking this?

2) How does the valve on the side work? This says the case is airtight.

Thanks, Double O.
The closed cell foam is soft yet firm. It’s not gonna scratch your knives. You don’t mess with the valve.

They are airtight to the point of opening and closing. I keep 3 rechargeable desiccant packs in mine and pop them in the microwave for 45 seconds or so maybe once a month.

They are 100% watertight.
