At times when my khkuri is not on my hip, what is the best way to store it? I would prefer to store it in the sheath(so my 3 year old will not get into it) but any advice would be helpful.
Bandit,
Store your khukuri in the scabbard. Unlike a leather sheath, the wooden scabbard actually wicks moisture away from the blade. It's a good idea to protect the stored blade with your choice of lubricants: olive oil, mineral oil, A.G.Russell RustFree, and Tuf-Cloth all have their enthusiastic supporters. I've tried them all and prefer Tuf-Cloth, but any of them will prevent rust, if you take your khukuri`out "just to check it" regularly
I'd like to add one thing to Berkley's excellent advice above. Another good choice for a lubricant is Rem Oil (with Teflon). I use it on my Khukuris (and guns and tools)and it works very well, even here in the salty/corrosive atmosphere of southern Florida.
Just to confirm the above advice: I have about 200 khukuris stored in my basement in the sheaths - and there is really no problem doing that - the wood actually DOES wick away moisture. Generally, though - I store my personal knives outside the sheathes as a rule. But Berk has a good point about the special properties of the khukuri sheath - especially when you lubricate.
