Store 110's and 112's In the Sheath or Out?

How many of you store your 110's and 112's in the leather sheaths? How many take them out for storage? I have a brass bolster 110 and a nickel silver 112. Neither gets used everyday- I work in an office where belt knives would be out of place. They get worn when I camp, hike or just wander in the woods.

Stories welcome...

Thanks.

If I purchase one NIB I store it in it's original box, in the sheath, with all the papers. So, I can refer to them should a question come up.
At work I can and do wear a 110 or 112. When I attend meetings or a conference I usually wear the 500 in it's original sheath. One from the Heritage series, with s30v blade and canvas micarta handles. DM

Just the other day I took out a knife from a sheath and the bolsters were full of verdigris ( the green corrosion that happens to brass). I knew the knife in the sheath was there for a short period. So then I checked another and same thing. I have hundreds of knives in cases and they have been there for months without any tarnish, I keep moisture packs in the cases and that could be why. So now I ordered 2 more cases to put the knives in and take the sheaths away. My very special one of a kind stone handle 110 and 112 go in a faux fur lined zippered canvas pouches. The knives are genuine stone, made by one of the best, and cannot be compared to any custom buck from the factory. The price was not a problem because each is solely unique. Some are semi-precious Jade slabs and Turquoise Slabs.

Daily wear and exposure to chemicals or salty water will tarnish the silver, then the plating will wear off and eventually the brass will start to exhibit that green substance called verdigris. The fact is, plating won't last.

I've always stored my 110 (old 1980s brass/walnut handle) OUT of the belt pouch.
Partly because it spends most of it's time on my bed room dresser because I like to look at it and for use in dealing with the odd late night zombie infestation . . . and / or on my desk doing duty as a paper weight (which it performs with unmatched splendor).
Yah . . . OUT.

If I have the box the sheath and knife are stored separate. No box then the knife is stored in the sheath. A little paste wax on the bolsters might stave off the green monster.

I like to keep everything together so here's what I do with extended time storers. A piece of a sandwich bag or grocery store bag wrapped around the knife and stored in sheath. Adds no size and protects the knife. A 110 fits perfectly in a flap over sandwich bag.

i keep them in the sheaths, but the brass does corrode and green very quickly. nickel not so much but does corrode sort of with patina for a lack of a better term. so i just clean 'em up and wax 'em and do it again when it happens after using and wearing the wax off etc.

I think much has to do with athmospheric conditions. In my dry climatic tarnish and green takes a year to return after cleaning. Use a plastic
wrap and this keeps it away much longer. DM

I line most of my mine up next to each other on my desk, no sheath. I like to look at them and play with them while I'm on BF. It also helps me make that tough decision each morning which one (or two) to bring along that day. Everything revolves around knives in my world! My fixed blade knives all stay in their sheath and within arms reach too.

I learned early on to never store a 110 or 112 in a leather sheath. Why ask for trouble?
Most of mine are on display anyway, but whenever a 110 stays with its box it's stored in plastic along with the sheath in the box.

yes Sir. very true. its very very wet where i am.

west of the mississippi its very dry shouldn't be much problem at all from humidity and moisture causes.

dry air is nice. i was in phoenix/mesa/scottsdale at a conf earlier this year...never breathed so well in my life except last time i was in vegas.

All my 110's came with the nylon sheath :(
My Old Timer 7OT's came with leather sheaths though. I keep one one 7OT in a Buck nylon sheath (Yeah ... I know ... it's sacrilege to put a Buck 110 in an Old Timer 7OT sheath, but I like leather sheaths over nylon, (more traditional) and cannot afford a genuine Buck leather sheath) the rest are kept in the sheath they came with. The green (if any) wipes off easy enough with a little Brasso, even if it does make the brass a fingerprint magnet for a while.

We have went 2 months now without rain. I do store my knives in display cases due to the green gunk that happens on the brass when stored in the sheath.

I wear one special 112 everyday and it's wiped down at least twice daily. A few others are in their pouches and get cleaned & oiled the first Saturday of the month. Other 112's (& 110's) stay in their boxes as shipped, and are wiped & oiled in January & July. The green beasties aren't much of a problem here.

I've only have one 112 with nickle silver bolsters, bought in 2016/2017?, and it's been fine so far.

I keep them separate. I don't always use the same sheath with the same knife. Sometimes my Alaskan guide sheath looks good with nickel silver and oak 110, etc.....

Always seperate for storage--even with non-leather sheaths! The green stuff is nasty and will wreak havoc on the metal.

I keep boxes in one place, sheaths in another, and knives on display. I like to look at them, fondle them, and polish them up regularly.

My users get stored in their leather, I take them out occasionally and wipe off the green stuff. My collection Folding Hunters get wrapped in wax paper and put back in their leather sheath. OH

We recommend to not store the knives in the sheath long term due to the growth of Verdigris

Jeff

I store my 110 in it's sheath and haven't owned it too long but it's doing great!!! That's awesome of you to give that heads up! A lot of people don't know Brass can tarnish a bit. I know that because I was one of those people not too long ago. :) Personally, I want my 110 to have an aged worn look and I want it done naturally. It still looks brand new after all those days in my sweaty hands, humid summer air, and back in its sheath for days at a time so I figure it's going to be awhile. lol
