Store 110's and 112's In the Sheath or Out?

Aging brass tarnish is fine, you just don't want the green stuff. Long term it can cause pitting and such..

Jeff
Yeah, I've purchased 110s that had been stored in the sheath for many years and were in basically new condition, but so pitted on a bolster that it was impossible to clean up satisfactorily by hand--had to spa them.

Leather is either vegetable tanned or Chrome tanned. You are talking Tannic acid or Chromic acid. The residues from the tanning process go after yellow brass and white brass ("Nickel Silver"). I store my brass knives in cloth sheaths and my Titanium knives in leather sheaths. No verdigris here boss.

Ive found the even in a nylon sheath, the brass isnt immune to tarnish. It fairs better for sure though

All mine are in the sheaths. It takes a long time to grow the green stuff. Then it wipes off easy enough.

I've only noticed the real heavy gunky think green if the sheath was treated with mink oil. The new sheaths are easy enough to replace so I don't treat them. Of course the answer to the OP is the safe thing is to store out of the sheath.

I like using a belt pouch/sheath, but I, too, experienced the brass tarnishing very quickly when stored in the sheath for even a few days. I wonder if it's something they use on the leather. It seems like my soft, brown leather Buck sheath tarnished the brass even more quickly then my black Buck sheaths.

I only now keep the aluminum Bucks stored in their sheath.

Could someone please tell me if I have to worry about this with the nickel silver version? I'm getting my first NS Buck in a couple days from C&C.
