Store Bought Or Online Purshase?

My Opinel I picked up at a local mall cutlery shop. My Buck was from WalMart. My Middleman was from a local hardware store. My SAK and Micra were from Target. My khukuris have all come directly from Uncle Bill. And I got my Spyderco from a forum member. My old EZ-Out and CRKT were purchased from another mall cutlery shop. My buying habits depend on available cash, chance deals and if a knife resuses to let go once I hold it;)

As for myself, I purchase the majority of mine online. The rest I buy from a local dealer who, coincidentally, runs an online knife site on the Internet, so I suppose that the argument could be made that all of my knives are purchased online. The fact that I browse their catalog via the web before paying them a visit to buy the particular item I have decided upon would support that position. The only item in my collection which was purchased at a retail store is my Leatherman PST2, which was a gift many years ago and was purchased (or so I am told) at Wal-Mart.

I just did a quick check and actually was surprised that roughly 25% of my knives were purchased at B&M stores (I would have thought it was less). It is true that most of these knives are the lower priced ones in my collection. Of late it's been almost all online.

One of the reasons my wife and I started our business years ago was the lack of knife shops in the area. And they always seemed high to me, so we joined the online fray, overhead is so lower, sure helps price. Have a great day all! Paul

Most of the knives I acquire online, I do so through trading. The new knives I purchase are largely done from some of the local dealers at the area gun shows. Over the years, I've bought more than my share of knives from Fred Harwart, "The Bladerunner", from Granbury. Not only have I bought alot of knives from Fred, but he's also taken knives in trades from me. When I do that, I'm always sure that it's a deal he can make money on-no junk, and I'm prepared to take a loss on the knife I'm trading if it helps me get a new knife I've just gotta have. ;)

I've bought knives online and am not opposed to it, it's just that this is way my buying/trading habits have evolved. geegee

Most have been bought on line from an internet dealer, blade auction, or forum member. Some from gun and knive shows. Saving up right now for the Eugene show April 12th & 13th. It is a real treat to shop at a great knife show where you get to meet the maker and discuss the knife and how it was made.

I've gotten most of mine from eBay, on-line dealers, gun/knife shows and BF. However, I will buy from the occasional store when I run across a good buy. I especially try to look for close-out/discontinued items when I'm in a store.

Don't get me wrong, I would like to support our local community stores. If it was a matter of 10-15% I'd probably do a lot more B&M business. Unfortunately the price different is much more like 35-50% depending on the knife. I just can't rationalize that much wasted money.

For me most of my purchases come as special orders through the store. Of course I do work for a knife store part time so I'm lucky to get discounts on everything I order.

I purchase the majority of my knives online, but occasionally I buy at a local sporting goods store if the price is "close" to right. I tend to spend more at local stores but I also get the instant gratification of bringing a knife home.
