Storing knives in sheaths

The only knife that has given me a serious problem has been the Gerber BMF. The factory sheaths have an unknown stiffener that deteriorates like celluloid and corrodes the blade.

I store my fixed in both leather and kydex. I do haul them out and apply Flitz polish on a regular basis though.

Don't know how accurate it is, but I was told by a sheath maker that most leather nowadays is tanned with chromium, which makes the leather slightly corrosive (thus causing pitting, discoloration, etc). Sheaths made using traditional vegetable-tanned leather don't have that problem, but are not common because that type of leather is much more expensive.

Curious if there's any truth to it...

Actually I believe it may be the other way around. I have purchased a fair amount of leather and all of it has been veg-tanned which is pretty common.:)

I think chromium in tanning was a lot more common pre1990. In the US, EPA regulations made a lot of people turn to alternative methods whenever possible.

I have plenty stored in leather sheaths. But...... I live in Casper Wy wheres it’s pretty damn dry with zero humidity.

Does anyone leave their knives in sheaths for long periods at a time? Not stainless steel but carbon steel.. i know it's bad but how much quicker will storing a knife in a sheath will it rust? I normally oil mine and throw them in the sheath but probably not for more then a couple weeks at a time

I think it is a very bad idea unless the sheath is made from something like ballistic nylon. If you study tanned leather you will find a bunch of chemicals in the tanning process that will eat up your knife. You could wrap your knife in plastic to protect it while in the sheath but that is a pain.

I keep a fixed blade knife in each of my car's glove boxes. They came with a nylon or kydex sheath. No worries. I would not store one in a leather sheath.
