A while back I started planning a wilderness trip and mentioned in the Wilderness and Survival Skills forum that most of my antique equipment was shot or MIA. In the ensuing discussion, member Storl and I began talking tents. With an idea in mind of my needs and price range, he sent people scrounging to find a tent in stock that met my needs (expensive) at a price I could afford (cheap). All the way through the transaction, he was on top of communication, reliable advice, and accurate pricing (no bait-and-switch) on the tent I eventually bought shipped the way I wanted it shipped USPS), paid for by my preferred method (M.O.).
Now, I must say I was skeptical about buying a used tent from someone I had never met, much less a tent that originally sold for several hundred dollars and was only driven to church once by a little old lady (used once by a fastidious climber with new factory sponsorship precluding him from using that brand).
The chosen tent, a Mountainsmith Sanctuary (discontinued model), arrived when it was supposed to and in the condition described. I took it out of the box and erected it intuitively with no instruction sheet. All parts were present and fit the first time. Looking closely at the tent for flaws and any sign of prior use, I was not able to find any whatsoever. One would expect more signs of use from a showroom display!
Essentially, by trusting Storl, I got a new top of the line tent for less than a closeout price, less than I expect the original retailer paid for it. I will be buying more outdoor equipment from this member. And I can heartily recommend to anyone that they check with him before buying equipment or outdoor clothing from REI or the likes. Thanks again Storl!
