STR Sod Bustr ???

been using it all night to make sandwiches, etc and it's a fine knife. The snap is dead on and I really like this one!

Good luck and make sure to post pics when you get one...:D

Brett

Thanks, Brett! Now I'm thinking about one! Steve, could you make one with a Soddie style blade? I'm just think'n!!

Well, I wouldn't hold my breath there my friend. I acutally do have an old Case Kentucky Bicentenial Sod Buster in Stag still mint in the box from 1976 that I bought a long time ago and I used the handle which I always liked as a pattern of sorts for what to shoot for back when I first drew this up because I always did like that handle on the Sod Bustr but the blade shape never had enough "splinter picker point" for me and too much up sweep at the tip so I wanted something either in a Wharny or something else with a good point and lots of straight edge.

At the time it was between a Spear point shape which is also not quite enough point, or a Clip Point blade, or Wharny which both offer a good point, (well at least the modified Wharny I make does). I was already doing a Wharny and thought why not the old Stockman blade? I carried an old Schrade 8OT for years and the big blade always saw a lot of use. The other two were mostly just added weight so to me just a single blade with that Sod Bustr handle was the original pattern I had and what I have made up. These blade shapes were somewhat copied from a combo of an old Buck Rancher and an old Schrade 8OT Stockman blade.

I didn't make any Sod Bustr blade shapes. Don't think at this point I could modify one of these to that shape either. I should call it something else I guess. Maybe "StockBustr" or something. Sorry.

Green linen micarta 'stockbustr'

I know I have no where near the photo skills of others showing off around here :D but someone asked to see it. Here it is. Again, its just a bare bones user. I know its not perfect but functionally it is right on. Great snap on this one. 1.8 ounces with .032 thickness brass liners, nickel silver pins, satin finished blade of ATS34 or 440C one or the other (long story) and perfect EDC size. Someone in my family will really enjoy this one I think.

Two down to go to sis. One more to go. May do the next one in burgundy linen. I am toying with using stainless on it also instead of brass just for some variety so each one is different.

That's OK, Steve---like I need One more knife!! Your Stockbuster is Great! Do the next one in burgundy, is right! :)

And the black one from earlier which has been riding in my pocket so I may end up having to make my sis another one since I kind of like this one:eek:.

Thanks for the interest you guys. Its very flattering.

I've been using the fire out of mine and it's a solid knife.

You know steve, whether it's 440C or ATS34, this knife is sharp and stays sharp. With all the cutting I've done, I haven't had to sharpen or even strop it. It still cuts paper like nothing. Nice heat treat and great profile on it.

This is my EDC from now on.

Thank you!

Yeah I think they are fine. Sounds like you are happy and thats good. These both performed admirably right beside my best high dollar wood carving knives so I think they are good to go. I just finished a third one and stuck all three in the mail to my sister before I sold another one or kept one. I needed to get this done so I can focus on the other things coming up. :D

Now I don't have any slippies made up in hand so I'll have to dig around to see what I can come up with for another if I get a second wind.

Well, I do love this one. I hope you'll consider making some more in the future as you seem to have a knack for it.

Brett

Thanks. I started out on slippies and grew up using them so its really a no brainer as far as how they are supposed to work. When you've had as many knives apart as I have you tend to catch on eventually, even if you're slow. :D

My first spanking was for taking apart a folder my dad gave me because I wanted to see what made it tick. Then I made my own copying the parts. When he got home and saw what I'd done to the knife he gave me because it was on the kitchen table in parts I was over his knee right quick! I think he felt bad after he saw that I put it back together no problem but then I was right back over his knee again when he realized that I kinda borrowed some select things out of his tool box like his spark plug gapper where two of the thicker pieces ended up as my new liners and also the pin as my new pivot in my new friction folder. :D I was pretty much a why person from an early age what can I say? :) Can't say I dug into daddy's tool box much after that though!

Jim I got some already remember? Its like a lifetime supply as big as that thing was. :D

One of these days I'll make use of it off the end cap I have for myself. The wife took the rest of it (for now) to use as a shelf. A dang heavy duty one at that! Thanks though.

Well, as the old saying goes, "every ounce of pleasure must be paid for with an equal amount of pain" or something like that. You know that wee bit of pleasure like marriage with the wee bit of pain that goes along with it! I think that was part of my wedding vows or something. I better shut up now. My wife's a member here you know!;)

Not as sweet as mine, but it's sweet, anyhow! Matter of fact, Steve hasn't made one as sweet as mine before. Just let me know if you want me to post another picture of it!
