The 12 inch long 2x4 jaws are lined with aluminum sheet. The heads rotate and adapt to the taper of the blade being straightened. I like to get the blade to the vise at around 700fh. or so.

The jaws can be shimmed on the other axis to conform to wider blades.

Nice. I have used a post vice while forging to re-align the blade edge with the spine and straighten things up. But that makes straightening out of the quench look easier.
Do you mostly use it on longer blades?

Am I correct in assuming this is done during an interrupted quench, after the pearlite nose?

All you do is stick it in there, crank it, and then it comes out straight?

The swinging jaws makes it adjust to any size blade. I make mostly longer knives and clamping a 12 inch bowie in it can work wonders if there's any warp to the steel.

I put the blade in the vise when its still malleable and thats above 400 fh for most carbon steels. I like to count to seven when the blade hits the quench; by then the steel is at 650 or 700 which the aluminum lined jaws will straighten with a little squeeze.

An interrupted quench would just be a shorter count and then too the vise.

I remember Stacy had posted a picture of his post quench press and I thought it was a great idea. Seeing yours reminded me to get my butt in gear and make one. I am going to order (2) 1" x 3" x 24" aluminum plates and rig up a pivot jig vice.

Thanks for posting, Fred!
