are there any American made straight knife kits available.. high quality blade a must

On their kit blades TKS does not do any heat treat but they cryo these blades for an additional charge of 2 or 3 dollars.

Of course they offer a heat treat service for maker's blades but if cryo tempering is requested there is an additional charge for it.

OK, A question. Does taking a kit blade that was heat treated some unknown time in the past and dunking it in liquid nitrogen really qualify that blade as cryo treated? I thought that for cryo treatment to provide the benefits it's intended to it had to be done at a specific time during the heat treat/temper cycle. Somebody set me straight here.

Thanks
James

James,
I would also be interested in finding out the answer to this burning question. Any takers?

Texas Knifemakers Supply Does not dunk blades
in liguid nitrogen.
Our process uses a baffeled cryo chamber that is controlled by computer, so that the cryo temp of(-305F) is reached slowly to reduce thermal shock to the steel.

The total process takes 48 hours and then the blades are re-tempered. otherwise the benifits of deep cryogenic quench does not occur.
Our specifications and heat-treat formulas were developed with the assistance of Crucible Steel's metalurgical team.
These heat-treat specs. for most metals are available upon request.......Just call us.

That answers any concerns that I may have had. It is always good to hear it "directly from the horse's mouth"! Welcome to Bladeforums Jim!

Jim;

Thanks for the info, didn't really mean that as a direct question of your methods, more as a general question, but it's good to know anyway.

Hope nobody minds me tagging another question onto this thread...

Anyone (Jim Lemcke?) have any specifics on their kits that use the "high vanadium" stainless? I've called in the past and heard "it's a Spanish steel, close to 440v" and "It's like 440c but with Vanadium." Anyone know the carbon, chromium and vanadium contents?

Jon

PS - I ask because I recently bought the "Moose"

blade and am in the process of finishing the bolsters right now.

Pretty neat blade FWIW.
