I can't seem to get the search function to work if i use more than one word, so forgive me if i am hitting on a topic already discussed. I have been thinking about building a straight razor for a while now and I was just check to see what others have used for materials, RC hardness, type of grind. I know whats involved with the construction and the building aspect, but the blade properties are still not that clear. Being a shaving implement should i HT to a higher number due to the fact that im worried about ability to hold a scary edge, or should i keep it lower to make sure it has that normal mix of edge holding but not being brittle. Anyway thanks for any advise.

razors are deeply hollow ground, with an almost paper-thin blade where it takes an edge.
They also easily chip, or even shatter, if dropped, so I guess they are tempered to a very high hardness.

Use 52100 or 13C26 (a stainless steel designed for razors), heat treat it as hard as you can, and grind it as thin as you can.
