Straight Talk About the Byrd Line

They are good knives, especially for the price. The only problems I have is I don't like the comet shaped byrd hole opener, and sometimes they require a good cleaning when you get them. I own a G-10 robin and it was filthy when I received it new, but once I cleaned it up it worked great. I think the byrd steel is pretty good quality as well.

When they were first released I swore I would never buy a Chinese made knife. Then I ordered a couple of knives from the Spyderco store and they sent me a free one with my order. I was very impressed with it, but I have not bought one for myself since then. If they had some designs that appealed to me I would buy them, all the designs they have I feel like Spyderco makes something better. Although I have recommended them to others who will not spend much, and they have been very satisfied with them.

I handles the Tenacious during a passaround and thought it was a very well constructed and designed knife. I'm sure the byrd line is just as good, but I also haven't seen to many byrd designs that appeal to me, with the exception of the cara-cara. I don't have one yet but it's on my list. I'd also be interested in a byrd fixed blade. It would be neat to have something small with an interesting design for dayhikes or just bumming around in the woods.

I picked up a byrd rescue (meadowlark/delica size) in PE and turned it into a wharncliffe (I haven't taken a pick yet). I've been using it for just under a week. When the edge needs to be touched up, I will try my hand at convexing the edge. If I do not like the way it works, then I will go back to the sharpmaker! I just like to learn new skills.

I think Spyderco should put their name on em. Like Benchmade's Red Class, you would have Spyderco's Byrd line. Regardless of politics, the decision to tap into $20 knife market benefits both Spyderco and the end user. Sal's red headed step child has proved that he's a hard worker and worthy of respect. The last thing I would do is give somebody a sub par knife. I have no qualms giving a Byrd knife to anybody. Every non-knife person I've gifted with a Byrd, almost to a man, has told me it's the best knife they've ever owned.

Top to bottom the Byrd package delivers. Design, workmanship and steel (and it's heat treat)--it's a complete package. How many times have we been asked to sharpen someone's no name knife with a Rc in the low 50's? I usually wind up frustrated and the poor sap who owns the knife thinks I don't know my ass from a hole in the ground when it comes to sharpening. Even if I manage to put a decent edge on it, it disappears if I look sideways at it. Not so with the Spyderco Byrd line. :)

I needed a rescue knife to keep in my car.

Byrd Meadowlark Rescue, $24.
or,
Spyderco Rescue, $70.

Why would I spend three times the price of the Byrd for a knife that may, or may not ever be actually used? Both will cut a seat belt. Value is above all in this situation.

As entry level or I don't care if I loose it knives, they are outstanding. They have a utility that far outweighs their cost. I have a Byrd Wings that I stuck in an emergency kit in my car. I would also not mind loaning it out to whomever if they needed it.

I'm a big fan of the Byrd line. My ByrdRench is very impressive. There is a amount of pieces that come together and must work correctly for the tool to function at all. To have a fairly precision-oriented tool come out of a Chinese factory really says a lot about the build quality.

I'm hoping to pick up a Wings knife after christmas.:D

They are not bad quality but as long as I do not have to buy a knife made in China I will not.

I've looked at them and they seem like nice knives.
But there's just no way that I'm ever going to have a chinese made knife in my pocket, ever.

thank you spyderco !!!! i have both and love the fact that they are real good quality for a low price !!!!!

the only problem with Byrd knives are that they're made in china. In the current economic situation, we shouldn't buy from china if we can help it.

Used a Meadowlark, silver steel. Excellent! I marvelled at how nothing is superfluous. The blade is cute, pointy and good for everyday cuts. The Comet Tail is a boon - so handy you can easily use it while in gloves. Slim, compact, but allowing a sure grip and a choke if you need it. Bought the same knife for my nephew. It rode in my rear pocket until one day I snagged it against a rim of the stool in some cafe and lost. Right when I put a nice edge on it to boot! Well, I then spotted black version, which I own today though it is not that solid, but still as pointy. It's a example of what is of essence in a knife and what can be done away with. You just snug it somewhere on you until the right moment and it'll sure pay you back for loyalty.

I got three Byrd's, and I like them a lot. Especially the Cara Cara G-10 is real work horse. Today I used the Meadowlark when wrapping Christmas presents, it cuts like a razor. I carry the Robin as EDC in my backpack, it performs remarkable for it's size.

Byrd knives are great . I carry my Sage and My Caly on my personal time but carry a g10 byrd crow half pe and half ce to work and before that a robin. They are great for work because they are reliable and cheap enough to lend to the " hey you got a knife " guy and after he cuts somthin on the floor and it rubs acccross the concreat the balde comes back sharp in no time. I am buying back up Crow incase they ever get discountinued.

One more question, do they have phosphor bronze washers?

Yes, pretty sure most of them do.

I know for a fact the Meadowlark does. As I posted in another thread, the build quality on the Meadowlark I recently purchased is on par with my Caly 3, which is astonishing considering it only cost 1/4 of what I paid for the Caly 3.

From what I've seen with the G-10 Meadowlark, Byrds are incredibly well made, and priced at a steal.

And plus, since the Meadowlark is pretty much the Byrd version of the G-10 Delica, it almost makes me wish the G-10 Delica came with a well-designed finger choil like this.
