I have been plaqued off and on with my blanks from a local heat treater, while his thick obtuse geometry knives are just fine after plate quench, I occasionally experience warpage. I really feel the warpage is because at times I get impatient and force grinding the faces with PM steels pre heat treat.
I just picked up 2 Z-tuff blanks with unacceptable warpage. I do not think clamping during temper would work as i do use a 1000 degree Fahrenheit temper but I have had decent results with clamping with shims and heeting to around 400 degrees, this technique only got me so far.
Long story short, i could only remove so much warpage with clamping and heat so decided to try the hammering inside of the banana technique. I took a 12 oz cheapy hammer and drilled a 1/4 inch hole to install a broken carbide drill bit secured with Gorilla super glue. Very ugly tool, but I was able to straighten my blanks with hammering inside the banana.
Thanks for all those that contributed to such useful knowledge sharing.
