Stranded With One Blade

You guys are insane, if im going to be there a while im going to want to build a hut or cabin or somehting, i would like to see you take a tree down with a SAK. I would take my BK&T Patrol Machete, it will cut whatever a small knife can cut, maybe not as well but it will take down trees too, something a sub 6" blade will not do, at least not in your lifetime.

The saw on a SAK will take down shelter size poles readily.

I would venture to say that more miles have been hiked with a SAK than any other knife.

A machete would be a great choice in a tropical area. Here in the north, an axe is a much better choice.

On a sub tropical island for weeks...

Without a doubt, in that environment, NOTHING would be better than a machete, bolo or golok. Personally, I'd want my 18" Martindale machete.

To learn what's best to use in a given geographical area, simply look at what the locals in those areas use. In the sub tropics, machetes are the blade of choice for 99% of the inhabitants.

Realize that in addition to shelter contruction you'll be splitting coconuts and clearing trails in a tropical jungle or rain forest. The tool of choice there is a machete. Those that choose anything else, will be in for a surprise. Try splitting a coconut with a SAK, or try clearing a trail with a Busse NO, and you'll wish you chose a machete. In the tropics, machetes rule.

Hey y'all, Im admittedly a city boy... but Im originaly from Guam (Typhoon goin on right now) and I gotta go with some sorta machete... maybe with an island girl attached...;) I made my choice based on the insane things I have seen my Grandfather (originally from the PI) and my uncles do with them...
tree felling... no problem... coconuts, whatever... My family has done just about any task I can think of with a machete... I admit I can't use one as well as them but the value of those cheap things is clear in my experience... I just can't get over the way they use those darn things... Small tasks, big tasks, it just doesn't beat a machete and some ingenuity... I do however agree you people with the survivalist mindsets and training could get by with a SAK but for feeble urban cycling ninjas(loosely used don't get yer underwear in a wad any ninjas out there...) like myself, the machete would make things a lot easier...

Note: I have never had any survival training or camped much... but am looking foward to My solo bike/camp tour comin' up...:D

This might surprise some folks, but not all sub-tropical islands even have trees.
You could be on a small atoll or small island with only rocks and sawgrass.

I think when we hear the word "island" we always picture swaying palm trees and jungles.

Just something to consider,
Allen.
