strange and interesting things found while hiking/hunting

In college I was lucky enough to spend a semester studying in Tuscany, while on a field trip I found some (recently shed/dropped) porcupine quills in some tunnels around an Etruscan tomb.

Very weird field trip...no one else wanted to crawl into the tunnels that day.

i have found many glass jars, old glass insulators for electric poles, old white glass milk jar lids, etc, hey bobo were you at fort hill in virginia when you found that m16 while doing the land nav course?

One thing that sticks in my mine is a canning jar of sauerkraut. It was located in the middle of absolue nowhere. I hope someone wasn't counting on it! I've also found an old cabin and a couple abandoned grow-ops. Near an old Mine site I stumbled across an old wooden pipe for transporting water, it was neat to trip across...

Stumbled across an old mining camp in southern Ontario when I was a teenager, and found stacks and stacks of core samples. Maybe 3"-4" diameter and 6-8 feet long.

I've still got a few small pieces.

Found a beaver skull last year and brought his teeth back with me.

2 years ago, I found 3 doe's that had been shot and arranged in a triangular / pyramid shape on the ground. Seemed kinda cult ish but who knows, probably some kids out there drunk just shooting first and checking later. Hadn't been there long, they were just starting to get ripe.

I have found a number of odds and ends but the two that really stand out are two plane wrecks on the tops of mountains. The first was a B-47 on Wright Peak in the Adirondacks (a well-known wreck, it happened in 1961, IIRC). The second was a small plane, a Cessna or something similar, on top of Mother Luna's Nose in Utah. I haven't found anyone else who knows about that one.

I've seen/found a few odd & ends growing up wondering the hills with my dad. I've got several flint arrowheads & spear heads. I've seen a VW minivan (like the mystery machine on scooby-doo) out in the middle of no where. I've came across a pot patch or 2 in my time & I've found pot plants still planted in 5gal buckets hide around creek's & streams. I've seen womens underwear (tops & bottoms) in various locations hanging from trees.

Axes fishing poles, pots pans all sorts of stuff people leave behind when Im canoeing.
Stpped for a bio-break on the highway last fall, there in the ditch was a 3000v generator, took it home had a look at it fueled it up and away it went, works very well.
Best find though was 2 cases of Crown royal Whiskey in quarts, bad part was took the cure on whiskey cant drink it anymore for some reason.
My weirdest finds were 2.Once when hunting mountain goats. Was in a high alpine basin miles from anything, looked down and there was a single grain of cow corn.Where I live there isnt any agriculture at all no farms, nearest place they grow corn is at least 90 miles away.Still wonder on that one.
The other was crossing the rail yard to get to work one afternoon, between the rails was a fresh still wet rainbow trout around 4 lbs.No marks on it anywhere.Laid there like it fell out of the sky.Ate that one
Im from BC finding a grow op is as common as tying up your boot laces to go for a walk.We just walk on by,the old saying the woods has eyes is a true statement
Theres a small village west of here their town motto is Welcome to ____, population 80 and growing

went shed hunting yesterday, didnt find any but going back tomorrow. its an area ive found numerous in other yrs. did find a dear jaw bone and one leg bone. a batch of redtail hawk feathers. what kills a hawk? no other feathers to be found so not an eagle. no fur either. also found a batch of bluejay feathers. will use on some craft project or another.
so yeah, i have a pile of bones and sheds from other hikes. numerous arrowheads and other artifacts. lots of fossils. some semi-precious gemstone/mineral deposits. feathers, burls esp root burls for woodcrafting. tons of spent shells of every description. use 38's and 357's for making arrow blunts. (those two fit 11/32 shafts perfectly).
same here with the old cars an trucks. amazing how deep in the woods those things can be found. usually take a looksee as ive found various "collectable" parts on some of these vehicles. hubcaps, mirrors, gauges inside, trim bits etc etc. these can sometimes bring decent prices on that auction site. slews filled with other metal things, appliances etc. have various family who live in rural areas and have enough land have done the same for generations. filled old washes with junk, eventually dumping dirt over the entire thing. thats where the old cow, horse, goat, hog, whatever else dies carcasses go too.
last week found a nice little led flashlight with a compass attached. was glad to find but felt bad for the guy/gal who lost it. numerous tools, one hatchet, several knives, a sweet little gold and black onyx ring(very old-gave it to a granddaughter yrs later)last week also found a pretty decent wood saw. stuck it in the woodpile it was near. figured someone would be back.
numerous pottery crocks n jugs over the yrs. some still completely intact.
fishing tackle of various sorts and conditions. axe heads.
those are mostly woods finds. of course beach combing yields a entire other list of items. and mtn biking ive found lots of stuff. lights, pumps, tool kits, a few wheels left in parking lots(ya know ya lean the front wheel against a tree or something, put the bike on roofrack, drive away....)
a scavenger down to the core. my pops taught me well...

Three SAK's - two of which had the black handle scales (lesson?)
Cat. MK II
Kelly hatchet

Stock for a gold mining company (long gone) - in glass jars in a shack that was about to slide down a hill. (I still have it. Very fancy. $500 and $1000 denominations)

Two pairs of eye glasses (Got back by touch?)

Stock and breach half of double-barreled shotgun. (Must be a story there.)

8 qt. Dutch oven (Got too heavy and abandoned? So how nuts were we to haul it down the mountain?)

Don't know if this qualifies. I was in a hurry at the time, but couldn't resist stopping for a pic of this guy. That's some good camo.

The best and weirdest one I've ever found was a beat up Old Town Discovery canoe out in the middle of the woods. No rivers, lakes, or streams in any direction for miles. Drug it out, took it home and fixed it up (new seats etc.) fished and paddled outta that canoe for years.

The hawk feathers were probably from two battling males.

Out mountain biking through new commercial subdivision found a body dumped in a cul-de-sac. We thought it was a drunk passed out till we came back an hr. later and it was clear he hadn't moved an inch. Called police. I never did hear anything else about it.

When in northern Ontario I was paddling on the St Lawrence River with some kids from New Liskeard High School in the late 70s and we saw a steam tractor and mining cabin with core samples. I did not keep any of the core samples.

When in the desert north of Los Angeles I found some gay pride baloons still inflated. I think that was a Sunday and the parade must have been the previous Saturday, but at least 50 miles away.

I found a Buck 110 on the sidewalk when I was 17. Kept it for 5 years before I lent it to a friend and he lost it.

Esav,
Those beings in the fourth dimension reak havoc on us in the 3 dimensional world.

Also when your friend is drinking heavy while camping he may misplace stuff. I wasn't there but I heard it.

Found a Buck 112 in the Bombardiers hatch on a B52 I was working on when I was 17, still carry that one, good knife, I am 53 now
Hiking in Vermont one time I found a big iron pulley or wheel on the side of a mountain, nothing structural around for miles.
