Strange find and starting this winters shelter

I took a group of Cub Scouts on an outing to observe a college archeology class on a dig. This was at an old plantation site and the dig was in a square measured hole that looks almost exactly like the deeper one in your pics. They were digging in an area out behind where they thought a couple of houses had been and they thought that the area would have been a trash dump of sorts. It was a slow tedious process as every scoop of dirt was sifted.

That is some pretty interesting stuff.
I would guess that maybe some one is planning one growing some food and putting it in a root cellar. Strange time of the year to start though.

It looks like a hobo camp, looks like the were growing squash for eating ( gourds are not edible, i am a pumpkin/squash farmer) they keep for quiet awhile in the right conditions. the little garden set up is neat but i would be careful the former tenant may come back.

No sign of anyone having been back to the excavation site or garden.

Shelter works nice!
