Strap Vest Vs back pack / shoulder bag

Howdy,

I'd much rather be in the woods today, but sprained my ankle, so thought I'd redeem the time by letting you know about this.

Let me start off by saying I generally spend several hours a week in the woods walking/hiking/ hunting etc - and I've tried to use several different methods to carry my gear - generally I am a Day hiker, (but definitely a Gear junky) so don't need a true pack, so for a while I'd carry a backpack or a camel pack - but got annoyed with having to take the pack off to get to my junk whenever I wanted it.

So then I went to a shoulder / sling pack, which worked great but obviously lost capacity over the back pack, and if I really loaded it down and was on a long walk, the weight would bother my neck/shoulder - and it was kind of a pain to have to take stuff in and out to get to the smaller items.

So a few months ago I was flipping through a magazine and saw the Filson Tin cloth Strap vest. - It is designed for Bird hunters (of which I am not really) the back is somewhat open so you can put birds/small game into into the back section or through openings in the front.

Has 5 pockets total and the game bag which is largish, so I thought I'd bite the bullet and see if it would work as a general purpose field vest.
Received it at the beginning of Ginseng season, and here are the contents so far in the pockets (want to stress though that one of the large Cargo pockets - is still empty :)

Pockets:
Fatwood
Lineman's wax string
paracord
Mag/flint block
Bic
4pack of Sting Eze
Spyderco Double Stuff Sharpener in case
Coarse Sharpener
Oil Cloth
Compass In Leather case
New Testament
ziplock packed with 10 Paper towels
2 large bags of trail mix
2 Packs of Jerky
2 Cliff Bars
couple of Slimjims & a pack of Raisins

Game bag portion:
On the Front Entry of the game bag there is a lanyard attachment and I rigged my Busse BATAC in Sheath w/ Firesteel to clip on it so it stands up right so I have ready access to the knife handle - cool design
Gloves
Couple of Ginseng Trowels
Guyot Standard Bottle
Large Nalgene Bottle (yes that's 2 total large bottles - and have thrown a third in if one of the Kids tag a long)

Chest Straps:
left - Petzl head lamp
Right - GPS (when needed)

Ease of Access / Comfort:

I can easily get to each of the Items without having to remove the vest, and the double pockets make it easy to separate the junk.
The wide shoulder strap design make it really comfortable - have been out for 6hrs walking the mountains and when I returned had no soreness in the shoulders.

It is nice to be able to hit a steep or uneven place and not have to shift the shoulder bag out of the way.

Conclusion:
Perfect for my needs - glad the Lord let me stumble on to it.

Might be a solution for some you other gear junkies who want an alternative to the shoulder/back pack.

I'm tickled with it

Nice little review. Hope you heal quick. I have been trying to decide on what to take hunting this fall, butt pack, one of those tactical type vests, backpack, etc...I guess you just added another option to the list.

looks like a great option. looks as if its more of you as opposed to an appendage.

You might want to add in one of those small tubes of Max strength ORAL JEL for toothaches to help out your STING EZE wipes.

Max strength Oral Jel is 20% benzocaine which is what really kills the pain while those wipes are probably 5%. The wipes do have something added to help with swelling, but let's face it, pain is what we want gone right now.

Plus, keeping with the idea of each item being able to do two things, the Oral Jel will help with killing a toothache or any type of sore in your mouth while out in the bush as well as bites and stings.
