I'm poor, and I have a knife addiction. I'm 21, got married at 20, and am trying to pay the bills while my wife goes to college. She is going for Dental Hygene, and graduates in the spring, at which point she will almost tripple our income (starting pay for a dental hygenist is $28)! The problem, is until she gets a job (or she catches a bad case of pregnacy:rolleyes: ) I have hardly enough money to pay the bills, let alone buy even a SAK! My question is, how do you guys that are in the same situation as me earn that little extra "expendable income"? I don't need (it's more of an amazingly strong urge) a Busse or a Sebie, I'm just looking for a way to make a few bucks to buy a few Bucks. I've tried eBay, but all I have left now is my knives, and only the ones I really like at that. Just looking for your ideas. Thank you.

P.S.: For all you single guys out there: If you have an evil temptress (aka girlfriend) in your lives, start saving, and investing in knives. Marriage is great, but single life has more knives!

Well, you can do what I did, that is make the hobby pay for itself. (check out my website) No one needs a sword, but if you want one, it is definitely easier on the family budget if you are selling something to pay for the swords. Perhaps since knives are your thing you should look into making sheaths or something. Of course it takes a little set up cost money, perhaps you could get a low interest small business loan. Alternately you might try something like mowing lawns after work taking another odd job or something alont those lines.

Second job or small business works.

I was a field archaeologist for several years, definitely not the profession for someone who wants to collect $100 knives, or even $50 knives.

Don't sweat it. Take a break from collecting, spend more time with the knives you already own, and relax. Enjoy the things in life that don't take away your hard-earned money.

Marriage is great, but single life has more knives!
Not for me. When I was single, I was free, worked "fun" jobs, traveled nonstop, but was always broke. Now that I'm married I have a much higher-paying job so can spend more on my hobbies. Plus wife buys me knives!

Best Wishes,
-Bob

yea, unfortunately the only solution is: make more money

...you could try selling Mtechs' on ebay. :p
the profit margin is decent. for slush funds anyways.

Also, if your wife is going to college .... remember the good $$ that every college student gets from being a lab rat!

If you can, save a couple bucks here and there. If you need some sort inexpensive user, like a minimalist SAK, you can get something like that on eBay dirt cheap ($3-$5 for a Spartan or Tinker) if you are willing to buy NTSA confiscation items. Brand names at cheap prices. Also, check wal-mart's sporting goods counter periodically for clearance items.

You're not going to like this answer, and many others here will read it in utter disbelief, but I do it like this: I frequently do without.

My wife and I each get an allowance. When we want to buy something "unnecessary," it has to come out of our own "piggy bank." So, I just bought a Fallkniven A1 survival knife and now my piggy bank is about $150 lighter than it was. Which doesn't leave much.

Yes, it means that I can't always get what I want. But, to paraphase a song: I get pretty much what I need. And perhaps more than I deserve of what I want. In this way, we stay on-budget.

some of these suggestions are great IMO...

small business
make the hobby pay for itself
cut expenses

would like to add to doing some reading for the upside!

3 books - buy 'em cheap, used, on Amazon or Half.com

Think and Grow Rich (Hill)
Rich Dad Poor Dad (Kiyosaki)
The Millionaire Next Door (Stanley, Danko)

One word...TRADING...its the answer...I have been broke for a while now but when I get the urge for a new knife I trade the old stuff for new things...All I have to do is come up with the shipping cost which is usually between $2 - $8 and I get a new knife or other new gadget to play with! Trust me, trading is your best bet!

Personally, I play poker for extra cash. But I'm also single with no wife to go ballistic on me if I have a losing session. And I definately wouldn't recommend it for everyone.

I'm the same way, I hardly ever purchase a knife new. I trade 95% of the time.

I am so amazed at the amount of Microtech knives on eBay. But if you are going to sell on eBay, you would have to get your items at wholesale or purchased at a deep discount to turn around to make it a go. So you would have to have some startup funds first to make money - something the OP don't have at the moment.

The best way to do knives on a tiny budget is to buy one and trade it out for the next, supplimented by a little money of course. It might take you awhile to get that initial decent knife though.

I'm in a somewhat similar situation (26 just got married, putting wife through nursing school) job barely covers school costs and mortgage/living expenses.

I sold stuff (Sprawl fight shorts) on ebay and bought three knives for pretty good deals. I'm keeping one (endura waved) and trying to trade the others for a griptilian. Then i'll be pretty set as far as knives go until she graduates at which point I will go nuts.
