Several reasons. Thanks for the answer Paul. While I have your attention do you mind me asking why you don't like the Boye dent? I have seen you mention that and just curious is all. Thanks!
BTW My CF stretch just arrived and it is pretty darn nice. The only thing I wish is that it had a way to flick it open and closed easier. That is not a problem with the knife at all. I just like to play with them and that makes it easier to do if you can wave it open or flick it open with a BBL or AXIS lock or even a thumbstud. That has nothing to do with the function of the knife just something I like to do when there is nothing to shred up into hundreds of little pieces laying around.![]()
I think the claims made for it are irrational. At various times, in various places, it's touted as a safety device which makes the lock more difficult to accidentally disengage, and as something which makes it easier to find the lock release. I think it is used in an illogical and haphazard fashion. Some of Spyderco's most heavy duty, SD oriented folders have been built without it (original Manix and Mini-Manix, Chinooks) yet the Kopa, Dragonfly, and Ladybug have it.
I think any safety function it serves could be served equally well by making the lock well a bit shallower. At least that's what's been given as the official reason why the large folders I mentioned did not have it. I can see it having been an acceptable solution on older models which would have required costly redesign, but on anything introduced or totally overhauled after 2002, it's just, IMHO, a gimmick.
It's very often poorly done. Sometimes that's merely cosmetic. It's not centered well or is angled from side to side. But sometimes its functional as well. For example, I have several C83 Persians that are very difficult to close because the dent was cut so deeply that the lock bottoms out before releasing.
Even when properly done, I find it uncomfortable. I have arthritis in my hands, and the points at the ends of the dent make knives with it less comfortable to use than knives without it.
And finally, I think it ruins the flow of the backstrap, so I dislike it on esthetic grounds.
