Strider Alternative?

I'm looking to get a knife preferably under 170 that's like a strider. I wish I could afford one, but I don't have the funds atm. I've looked into the zt 0350 and the Benchmade adamas 275. You've heard of these as being heavy and hard use. Striders are bad ass knives, but can anyone recommend an alternative?

Meh, wait for a strider to pop up on the exchange. There is nothing wrong with ZT, if I was you I would go with a strider. Do some digging, you'll find one, if that's what you really want.:D

DPX hest is close

really? ...is it though. I wouldn't personally put them in the same category. I've always considered the entire DPx line to be a bit of a "gadget" market and more of a special interest group piece.

There isn't really an "alternative." Honestly, if you're already looking at dropping ~170, you're not too far off from used SnG territory :)

But if you're looking for brand new, the HEST/F is very nice and similar enough, one of my favorites on a short list of knives  I would never advise anybody to pick up a ZT in lieu of a legit Strider, they're just not on the same level (design or fit/finish).

Overbuilt titanium frame lock with thicker steel than necessary, high grip choil

its definitely a contender

that blade has to be thicker than necessary to make up for the amazing stress riser formed from that ridiculous cut out for a bottle opener. take that gadget out and you could thin up that blade steel by a considerable amount and have a knife that cuts better and is just as strong. take out the bottle opener and you have an overbuilt blade that could actually be a contender. maybe its just me but I can open a bottle with every knife I own without weakening any of their structures... if I couldn't, I would buy a Zero Tolerance and a $2 bottle opener.

The cutting edge and blade thickness of the Hest 2.0 compared to the SMF is probably near identical. The handle on the SMF is much larger than the Hest though.

+1 on the Hest/F. Over built beast of a knife, for way less than a new Strider will cost... and yes I have both Strider and DPX Hest knives.

The SMF has a .19 blade and the HEST has a .197 blade, but the Hest has darn near a full flat grind where the SMF typically has the "3/4" grind. Take that for what you will :)

I always thought the Ritter grips were good alternatives. The blade shape and steel are very similar. Obviously a huge difference in handles but adding custom scales down the road would give you a quality tank of a knife.

look up on youtube its actually very similar to the sng

If anyone is doing anything cutting related they will not be able to break the blade on the HEST with their bare hands.

I've got a few striders and one hest, and in comparison its hard to justify the price difference

Bottle opener isn't the greatest thing in the world, but is useful and functions like a wave also

Jimping is awesome, and apparently can be a wire stripper also

Roto lock functions like a hinder stabilizer, but can also function as a lock bar disengagement preventer

multi tasking, while not detrimenting its main function, is just plain cool

Just keep saving, you'll end up with it eventually if you don't. Buy once cry once.

Strider warranty, no questions asked. Just gets fixed. I've read of people throwing there sng, or smf at trees, chopping, beating the snot out of them. And the knife gets dull, and the guy said there was a small amount of damage to the blade,(micro chip) and it was sent in , sharpened and fixed.

Right on regarding the DPx HEST/F folder.

Just like to add the glass breaker and narrow profile making it take up less room in your pocket. The Milspec model is even better with stonewashed Sleipner steel. Under $200 delivered!

Caveats: blade length is only 3.1" and it needs break-in time with sticky Ti lock.

I view the DpX Hest as the Homer Car of the knife world.

For those that don't get the reference:

I would honestly say just save up for one. If you want an alternative, it'll always be an alternative and your desire for a Strider would not be satisfied. You'll end up spending more money to satisfy that. Just save up and it'll be well worth it. I wasn't much of a Strider guy till I got my SnG. I did some mean things to my knife... and it didn't break. I did have lock up issue, but Strider fixed that after I had sent it in.
