Strider break-in period?

Does anyone know if this break in stuff is intentional on Strider's part? If so what is the point of it? I don't get it.

Yes it is. :)

The tolerances are extremely tight on the Striders so it will take a little time to break them in.

I would imagine it's something similar to breaking in a new 1911 pistol. The metal on the slide and frame need a little bit of time to smooth out together. My kimber was tight when I first got it and didn't like big hollowpoints on the first shooting. After a few hundred rounds it was "broken in" and worked like a charm. I imagine the metal to metal contacts on the Strider lock have to do something like this.

Everyone is aware that most firearms, at least semi-auto handguns, have a break in period. Why is it such a big deal for a knife to have one?

Secondly, every knife is not for everyone. If you guys don't like a Strider folder trade it off and try something else. Maybe you'd like a sebenza or XM-18 or something like that. There are plenty of people trying to trade for a strider on the trading forums.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Do you have 'Strider Thumb' yet?

I have two strider thumbs! :D

Yes, its seems to be because of the tight tolerances, but also because the tang on this knife is concave and not flat like on most knives. Doesnt that add the stickyness? Maybe a strider expert can explain why the tang is designed this way? Is it because the flame lock bar travels in arc and to try and keep the "contact patch" uniform as it wears?

But the breakin seems to also be part of the personality of the knife, its like its breaks the owner down before it even breaks a sweat, lol. I love how strong the flamelock spring is, soooooo strong and puts so much pressure on the tang. Unlike another one of my ti frame lock knives, even under free movement it wouldn't travel all the way across the tang. One thing I never thought about tip up carry is the pocket clip also adds the lock the pressure, at least it does in the case of strider.

I use the same rule for knives as I do gun's, 200 rounds :)

Is it normal that on my strider only one of the blade washers spins and the other one doesnt? Has anyone noticed this before? Only the one on the G10 side spins.

IDK, but if your knife works then I wouldn't worry about it.

Yes indeed, you nailed it, vpsaline. It also keeps the vector forces in the same plain as the locking bar to resist a tendency to shear to the side.

What people find as a 'stickyness' to the lock, is mostly due to the interface of the softer Titanium with the harder steel face on the tang. A bit of spalling occurs in the Titanium and after some use, things smooth out quite nicely. I have noticed this process in every Titanium frame knife that I own.

i was talking to an unnamed strider employee literally yesterday and he said : "Some people apparently think they need to "break in" their folders, which is BS"

this comment disturbs me, because i've found almost ALL knives to require some break in, ESPECIALLY hand made ones.

they're getting smoother though, as far as from-the-factory finish. they have a guy there who's aparently tryin to do em smoother than they used to be. the last couple batches out (the 3/4s and the TAD Dauntlesses have been smoother than any other PRODUCTION frame-lock folders out of their shop to date.

also : ALL Striders are worth it.

anyone have a link to the official strider FAQ? someone had it posted on their own server, and since the forum it used to on is down, thats the only copy left.

there was a part in there that was a quote from Mick Strider himself about how the surfaces "wear together", but i dont remember it exactly.
