Your point is very valid and worth remembering. Taxes and shipping can be a significant additional expense. That is one of the reasons why a lot of people in Europe buy used knives off the "for sale" forums and have them shipped by private citizens. If you buy from a European dealer, you still pay a lot of taxes but, the shipping and taxes are all buried in the retail price so, there are no nasty surprises from Customs.
