Hello all, my name is nick and I'm a noob to this forum. Im looking to obtain a quality fixed blade with a blade length of appx 5-7 inches in length and one preferrably that's forged. I will be using it as a carry blade for when i go hunting and fishing in the wilderness.

I was thinking about Strider Knives. They have a couple of models that seem appealling. They also seem to be well-made, however I don't know much about them.

What are your opinions on these knives and, for current owners, would you recommend them.

My budget is appx $400.00 max but if the right knife came along I would consider exceeding that by perhaps $100.00.

**If this is the wrong place for this or if there are already many threads devoted to STRIDERS, I apologize in advance***

If it were my $400, I'd be shopping for a custom knife. Just in case you weren't aware of that option...

Sorry that I can't be of any real help regarding Strider knives.

Welcome to BladeForums!

You could get a pretty nice Busse for $400 if you want to stay with a production knife and get a great (but not forged) blade.

How many knives do you already own Nick? If you'd go for a custom, you should know exactly what you want and for which tasks you need the knife. Many Striders have wrapped handles which makes them a bad choice for fishing and similar tasks.
There are a lot of good knives out there, which cost way less than 400 $...

Hi , thank you all for your reply. Morales, i currently only own a Zero-Tolerance folding knife. I want a knife that will last a long time and be tough and durable.

Yeah, the wrapped handle is a bit of a turn off, however i have never handled one so i cant say for sure. Hopefully some STRIDER owners can weigh in...

thank you again for your response

Unfortunately, I don't own a Strider, but I handled quite a few on several occasions. They will take everything you throw at them. But I doubt that you want to abuse yours. Paying a lot of money doesn't mean it's a good knife for you specificially.
I personally think you should first make up your mind about what you need the knife for. Think about whether you need one or maybe two knives (one for the fish, one for the rest). There's no need to spend hundreds of dollars on knives that might turn out to be pretty useless when you're in the wilderness. 100-200 bucks might be enough to get what you want.
Just my humble opinion.;)

You can get a sweet deal if you keep your eyes on the knifemakers for sale forum here at BF. With the price of a Strider I would go for a custom, and you could probably save a bit of cash!

Spend your $400 on a Busse...they will hold their value much better than a Strider and will out perform Strider hands down.

Hi thanks again for all of your responses. i really appreciate it. alot of good knowledge here !. i will take a look at Busse and Falkniven. I will also investigate custom knives.

My main purpose for obtaining the knife is for a carry blade for when i go hunting and fishing. i also do outdoor photography part-time and that takes me well off the beaten path. I am looking for a strong, durable knife that, if called upon, can defend me against wild animal attacks and also serve as a multi-purpose light chopping and/or cutting tool.

Thanks again fellas :)

There are some incorrect statements in this thread. Strider does make forged knives, they are just more expensive. They don't all have wrapped handles. They come also in g10 and the latest g10 gunner grips are superb. They have a multitude of styles (spear point, tanto, persian, survival type). There is a number of styles that would be suitable for outdoor use. Having said that, there are also a heap of custom knives that would be suitable and you can see many types on in the "customs by maker" on this site.

I would start by thinking of the tasks the blade needs to excell in and the environments it will be in. Then I'd think of a steel and blade shape to suit those needs. If you're uncertain search around old threads or start a new on about steels and blade shapes/thickness/grinds/etc. Then I'd hit up a custom maker. Striders are good knives as many other knives are depending on how you use and care for them. There are other cheaper alternatives as mentioned above that are really great quality.

Hi Irezumi, yeah, i thought some of the blades were forged. i would be looking at those models. Strider's website seems to have some good info. the MT-L Model looks solid. however it does have the woven handle....

Someone had asked earlier on what knives i use. I forgot to mention i have a Gerber Trident (i literally forgot all about and "found" it when i was cleaning out my rifle bag earlier today but after my original post. it was hidden in a compartment).

That being said, that knife seems ok but, for some reason, i feel the blade may snap in half if i ever had to use it in some type of stressful situation. It just feels "brittle". Maybe im imagining things but i wouldnt use it by choice if i had a better alternative. anyway, thanks again for your response
