Strider opinions?

I've been jonesin for a tanto of late and have been looking at the Striders. Probable the SMF with the flat grind tanto if I could find one.

What do you guys think of Striders in general? On another forum they seem to be well regarded and do no come up for sake very often.

My opinion is that you should read through this.

There are literally dozens and dozens of threads on this topic already. Searching will yield a lot of information.

Personally I really like the knives. Had 10, currently own 4. IMO the SmF is the best of the bunch. Had 4 SnGs and still have/love one, but the SmF really wins me over. It's not the size. I think the overall design is their best.

I'm on and off with what I carry, but I DO think that the sebenza is easily a better knife. I would not let a friend buy a Strider until they've carried a Seb for a few months.

Thanks for all your input guys. I still need to noodle decision. I've looked at Sebenzas on the web too and they do look very nice. When all is said and done, who knows. I have all these voices in my head all saying different things.

Have plenty of both, like both - they are different...IMHO the CRK is more knife for the money, but YMMV...

I picked up my first Strider 2 weeks ago. An SNG tanto variety. Expensive as snot to me personally but I don't regret it. I've read through all of the negative things that have been posted about one of the co-owners and I can see how some folks get bent out of shape. Personally it didn't affect my decision once I actually held the knife. It’s got a lifetime warranty and I’m very impressed with the quality of the knife. It’s my favorite in the collection to date and I’ve got more than a couple.
The only advice I can offer is to actually hold one and make your own determination before making the purchase. Good luck with your pursuit.

Here's mine with a couple others that I picked up at our last local show (click photo to enlarge):

Given the opportunity to take a wrong turn, a Strider thread can go on for 30 or more pages.

They go up for sale all the time. Of course, in that other forum, they are considered "Custom" which is a bit of a laugh.

I don't think ZT's production capacity is anywhere near enough for any of their designs to take over the demand for Striders.

You have no idea of what you speak. That ratio is drastically weighted in the other direction. I have no way of proving this, but I bet KAI/Kershaw/ZT makes more knives in a day than Strider makes in a year. Anyone able to offer numbers?

As far as Strider knives go: I owned an SMF and SnG and sold/traded them for something else long ago. They were crude and strong, but nothing special. I still own one of the early MT-L fixed blades and like it for what it is: a bare-bones utility knife with combat styling.

Maybe they do, but they can't even keep up with their own demand, so how are they going to keep up with any additional demand? Maybe eventually, but not at this point. And I'm not talking about their overall production capacity. Of course they make a milliion times more $30 knives than Strider does $500 knives. I'm only talking about ZT.

Whether, I'm right or wrong, I don't see ZT hurting Strider's business at all. Hinderer, Strider and ZT all sell every knife they make relatively easily, so there's obviously room for everyone. People are going to keep buying all of them.

They're good knives with a good design. I enjoy my SnG and PT.

They will require a reprofiling of the edge bevel to properly utilize cutting performance. That may take some effort since there is a fair bit of steel and it's HT'd quite well.

Strider opinions vary a great deal. Therfore, it makes little sense to ask for them. Some love em, some hate them. Disreguard what everyone else thinks and form your own opinion.

Here is my take on strider:

I have a green aluminum frame smf 3/4 droppoint that I basically beat to death everyday.

Sharpen it every other day before I sleep.

I use it for everything from cutting paracords to taking apart strykers. (Took it apart once and it was b/c some panels needed motivation to come apart)

This tool of mine has not failed never failed me so far.

Maybe I got lucky and got a really good one, who knows?

I have an SNG and the Ergos feel really good, but for some reason it is just not my thing. They are worth the money because the used market says so and they are still in business... so there you go. This is just a knife you will need to get in your hand to find out if you like it or not. Like a poster stated above, get one on the used market and if you don't like it just recoup all your money by selling it. No loss.

I think I'm going to put that into my sig line. It is the whole thing in a nutshell.

I have a Strider SnG and a CRK Umnumzaan. I like carrying them both. They're both smooth and solid. Definitely both high quality knives. I do not regret my purchase one bit.
