I have a chance to but a Strider SMF DGG Green stoneashed new but 2nd hand for $550 comes w/leather sheath. Guy says it's 2 years old, are there any advantages to buying a new one, I mean has there been any design upgrades that would make a new one a better knife. The new are $550 also.

If it hasn't been used at all, there really is no advantage to buying new. It's not a great deal but you'd be getting that sheath free essentially.

Yes, the recently made ones have a new locking interface. Buy the newer ones from 2012 and on.

No not great deal, you exactly right the sheath is the everett one I think, it's heavy black leather molded shape of SMF. It's a configuration I like, green +stonewash

I thought so, and the guys a collector, so you know he had to flick it some, it's only natural. He was asking $700.

You just said he quoted 2 different prices, which is it?

Also, if he is matching the price of a brand new knife, may I ask you why you would even consider buying the 2 year old used one? Doesn't make any sense at all.

He had it on ebay. Lowest bid was $550 but $700 buy it now, sorry I should have explained. The advantage is that that particular configuration, Ranger Green w/stonewashed blade and thumb stud isn't available. Ranger green stonewash w/a black thumbstud is available. The leather sheath/holster is nice, I tink they cost around $75, but that's not a major consideration I guess.

Uhh, yeah there is. Strider recently changed their lock geometry which greatly improved their function and longevity.

I know about the lock difference but I interpreted the OP as asking the advantage of buying that particular version pre-owned vs getting one through a dealer. Not all the dealers have the new lock geometry just yet. I do have to agree with you though, the new lock interface does seem much better.

it improved their knives by leaps and bounds, no doubt!

Luckily, I haven't had any issues with my SnG so far but I do wish it had the new geometry since It probably will develop play eventually. I can't understand why they didn't cut the tang at a straight line from the beginning. It just makes more sense logically.

Just for reference for anyone who doesn't know the difference between the lock geometries, here's my Gen. 6 SnG which has the "old" tang.

I have had many Striders and all in all, I think they are fantastic knives. You can argue the price point all you want but I have always loved my Striders and probably always will love the ones I have today. Old lock LFI and the new.
