Strider Question

Nope, the SMF and SNG have the same .190" blade thickness, regardless of whether they are CC or not.

i dont have one anymore to measure, but i remember my cc blade being thinner than a regular.

could be misremembering.

Thanks for the info again. So I guess the CC is not quite as "Hard Use" as the normal ones?

Thanks,

Adam

They are just as "hard use" as standard editions. Just better for your pocket. Same warranty applies too. I opted for the Stonewashed blade / lock bar slab CC version. Completely secure in hand and very comfortable in the pocket. Even when dressing up it felt fine, albeit a bit heavy.

Yep, blade thickness is the same.

Thanks, great info. Decisions, decisions.

I think I am leaning towards the standard SNG, OD green, with the tiger stripes. Knife art has it for $400 which I guess is the going rate if I can not find one used, or similar and used. Any idea how well the tiger stripes hold up?

Thanks,

Adam

The tiger stripes hold up fine. They will wear, but not like a black oxide coded blade (where it's immediately noticeable and looks bad).

If you want to wait a bit, post in the WTB and scan the exchange. They pop up every now and then for under MSRP. You probably won't find a new one for under though.

Strider stripes hold up just fine. They look even better after solid use. Digi cam holds up well too. Stonewashed marks up the least.

Matador-

I prefer the full slabs on the regular models, mine are absolutely solid.

I also prefer the flamed Ti look you get on the regulars.

Strider's are not known for great slicing even with the flat grind. The first thing I did was re-prophile the factory edge to compensate.

I would hate to guess how the 3/4 grind slices. I would go flat for sure.

+1 on that. Strider knives are definitely not known for their scalpel like slicing, but they are tough as hell.

+2.

The 3/4 grind is really just a hollow grind IIRC. But it's thick. Looks nice, but I think the standard grind looks fine.

Glad I read that before I jumped into the 3/4. It does look cool and I think that is why it appealed to me. Back to the original plan I guess.

Thanks,

Adam

I don't know why, for a fact, why the Strider's have such a big choil that makes cutting edge pretty short for the overall blade and handle size, but:
1. most obvious reason could be they wanted a knife where you could choke up for finer cutting tasks...
2. maybe more likely, when using for heavy or defense tasks, IF the lock should become disengaged for any reason, and fold up on your index finger, if you had "choked down" and had your index finger in the handle cutout/guard area, the blade choil area will contact your finger... pretty big ouch, but you are unlikely to suffer a bad cut, or worse, severed from knuckle forward.

Good thread by the way... thanks. Had same question on model numbers. So the easy (?) way to remember: SMF for large and SNG for medium blade length. Shame they didn't put "M" in the medium (SM) and "L" in the large (SL). And PT for small (petit? not so much). Go figure.

Thanks to Powernoodle for the comparison picture (and the scary avatar)... the Strider's are pretty big.
