Help! I got my MFS a few months ago, but haven't had a chance to make it work. Now I am getting ready to go hunting, and have the itch again. I have been actually thinking about D2 steel! Help me before I buy again! How? tell me about the toughness of Bos treated ATS 34 and Strider blades. Anyone ever chip out a blade? Break a tip? I already know how well they hold an edge. PLEASE don't send me to Cliff Stamp's WB review, either- that guy is sadistic!

Paul,
Using my MT I've pried open two locked doors in residences, an exterior door on a trailer, tried to pry open a trunk (finally used a 12 gauge slug), stabbed it into the roof and trunk of a car, split 2x4's, etc. No damage yet, I mean none. Oh yeah, I've cut some stuff, too.

My BT cuts fingers REAL good!

*Note: I was out at my buddies private range a few weeks ago and did some flak jacket penetration testing. We rigged the jacket (usmc issue) up to a tree and proceeded to test it against blade & handgun penetration. My BT didn't quite penetrate the vest all the way thru but a gerber spear point model did. I believe it has a lot to do with the thickness of the blade at the point. I'm willing to bet that a different style Strider would do the trick. We also shot it with .45 fmj, .45 hydrashok's, .9mm fmj, .357 fmj, and a .22 fmj at point blank range. The .22 & .357 made penetration but the jacket stopped the .45 & 9mm numerous times. All in all, i was quite impressed with the flak jacket. As far as the Strider goes, I wouldn't trade it for the world (in a real situation i would've put it thru someone's grape). We are going to conduct more testing in the near future and will post the results & photo's when possible.

Paul,

The MFS will do the job. I've carried mine everywhere and done all my cutting tasks with it since the day it arrived and, other than a few small surface scratches, it's doing great. I'm more impressed with it today than I was a month ago.

Paul Bos heat-treat can't be beat by anything else out there that I've seen. Those that trash ATS-34 as an inferior steel obviously haven't had an opportunity to handle on of Paul's heat-treated blades.

In other words, if the proverbial stuff hits the fan, it's a Strider Knife I'll be reaching for without hesitation. :)

Thanks for the input, guys. I am looking at it now, and this is what I will stay with for a while. I have been impressed with the edgeholding. I have a stonewash finish and I re-wrapped it the Strider way. The blade shape is about as good as it gets for a hunter, in my view, along with all the utility of a Strider. Thanks again!

Paul

Should I treat the steel under the wrap to prevent corosion? What do those Strider Guys use? Is the cord normally treated with anything? It doesn't appear so, but I have lost that great smell a Strider has- is that Mil Tec?
