Strider SNG or Chris Reeve/ Wilson Combat Star-Tac

regarding the new pivot on the striders, it has only been on the pt series. it looks like a microtech (three prong) tool might work. the blades do intersect the lanyard holes, but a lanyard should only go through one, not both.

i don't care for the umnuum, but have only handled one on two occasions, and my dislike is purely aesthetic.

tell you what, shoot me an email. i have an sng on the exchange that hasn't been getting much interest. i would be happy to send it to you for a trial run.

no pressure to buy mine, just see if you like it.

That's awesome, MORIMOTOM, you deserve mad kudos for that!! This is an awesome place and here is a shining example of someone who makes it so!! MORIMOTOM I'm near you in Cali, give me a call sometime, first round is on me!

No doubt! This is why I love this forum! People go out of their way to help out others without any need to do so. I am very appreciative of the offer but I don't want anything to happen en route...even with insurance its a loss of a knife which always sucks. I will deffinately be keeping an eye on it since I may buy it. :D

I like the Umnumzaan more than any of my other knives. Although I havent owned any Striders, I would like to buy one, one day, but the thing that's holding me back is that Im hearing from some members that they have had some quality control issues with their Striders and that their customer service is terrible.

Well if i'm spending $400+ on a knife, it better not develope any blade play! That's deffinately making me think twice. Has anyone else experienced blade play issues?

Never had a Strider develop blade play.

Thanks. Could it be that older generations experienced more play than newer models? I know they changed the pivot which could possibly effect lock-up.

Don't think so, unless they see one heck of a lot use and very hard use to the point were they start to wear and need adjustment I don't think so.

Any Framelock will need to be adjusted if the start to wear out, but that will take a long time.

I have beat on mine and they still didn't develop blade play, had 4 total, still own 2.

I live in suburban area but travel to urban areas very frequently...I live in NY- not very knife friendly at all in the city but where I live, I have never encountered any issues thankfully. I plan on using the knife as an EDC with mostly slicing tasks but the occasional "hard-use" application is always a possibility. I actually like the choil on the Striders but the fact that the Umnumzaan doesn't have one isn't a detraction from its appeal to me.

You may want to consider the Umnumzaan then. I think the Umnum is a better slicer than the Strider, and the Umnum will stand up to occasional hard use tasks. It's also a little more friendly to the natives than the Strider.

I have a 2011 SnG digicamo and it's flawless. I have to assume a lot of the "quality control" issues are now resolved. if there are any negatives, they're that I don't get to use it hard enough...

I hated the umnum I got I was glad to get rid of it, was hard to open "thumbstuds set against the handle scale" and lock didnt look comfortable cause its just a ceramic ball not the actual ti frame keeping it locked, I have a sng and a smf digi blade both are solid, I wouldnt trade either one.

I have an SMF CC SW that is going no where. Great knife and solid all the way. I love all the room on the handle and the CC carries very nicely. I have a Zaan on the way but I can't ever see letting go of my SMF at this point.

Well its sounding like an SnG is the way to go. So far, I've heard that a couple of you with 'Zaan's and Striders prefer your Strider over the CRK.

The new 3/4 hollow ground blades should let the SnG slice better, though the Umnum would still do better with 0.140" blade thickness compared to the 0.190" of the SnG.

However, CRK tends to run their S30V a bit softer at Rc 58-59 while Strider goes for Rc 59.5-60, so the knife would stay sharper longer.

I didn't even notice a difference in hardness when looking at specs...thanks for posting that! Also, I'm trying to figure out which configuration I would get if I did go with an SnG. Are the edges of the G10 thin/fragile on the CC models? It seems considerably thinner than the normal G10 on the edges.

Unless you've found pictures of a strider CC folder with broken G10 scales, I wouldn't worry about it. I myself only found a picture of someone who drove his Strider into a computer monitor without any evident damage to the blade(other than a blunted tip).

If you break a Strider you were trying to break it. ;)

SnG blade thickness is 0.164", not 0.190".
You're thinking of the thickness of the SmF.:)

the cc is anything but fragile. i suppose one could say they are more fragile than the lego, but i am unable to get any flex with my hands.

by my caliper (starrett):

cc scale at the edge: .059"
lego scale thickness: .122"

so roughly half the thickness.

Had both, sold both. If I were hell bent on one of these two, I would pick the SnG... It's just more comfy. I DO think that the SnG's lock will wear faster than most framelocks due to the way the lock face is designed. There is BARELY any contact on the Ti side... they call it a "sh!t vent" ...look it up on BadLands or JD.

That said... I believe that the Lg. Seb (21 is my pref.) blows them both outta the water.
